1989 headlight glitch

I've had this van new since 1989 and this is the first problem I've had with it. I was driving and the headlights flickered then went out. I figured it was the switch so I bought a new one without any luck. Is there a fusible link for the headlights and if there is, where is it? FYI, everything else works fine, just the headlights will not come on.

Almost a year later, but for those that are still looking for answer on this. Check your wiring harness at the light connector. make sure the ground area ain't melted down and also make sure that it is clean and you do not exceed the requirement for the power of the bulb as you will melt that connection.

The required bulbs are 55 to 60 Watts and your harness should be able to take the load "current"

But if you go to the extreme like me "conversion H4 125/135 watts" you will have to rewire your light behind a relay to take the load. or else you will simply melt those suckers in no time. you won't have any day time running light then, but make sure you do it properly with the right gauge of wires. i used a heavy gauge to take the current "18 or 16 i think it was"

Also, make sure your headlight switch is working. if it ain't well? replace them before doing any rewiring. check that first

Gee, it has almost been a year since this happened. Thanks for you reply Aqua but I found out what my problem was. My neighbor is a mechanic for the power company here and he has worked with many Astro vans and his first question was if I had checked the Hi/Lo beam switch. I said no so we checked it and sure enough it was melted. We replaced the switch and everything works again.

I might add though that the designers could have made it a lot easier to get to by just moving the mounting screw from the top of the steering column to the side or bottom. There is plenty of room to do that. Instead, I had to drop the steering column down just to be able to get a small wrench to loosen the 5/16" bolt to get the switch out.

Ya no kidding. i have had many Astro and Safari and some of the engineering just simply doesn't make any sense.
i had to replace my entire steering column for a bloody Horn that didn't work. one piece of a bushing to the ground connection at the bottom of the steering shaft was worned out.

But eh, there is always a way around it to make it work again:grinno:
