Never owned a Honda before. Always heard they are known for high mileage and retaining resale value. Considering purchasing a used Accord. What are your opinions??

$3200

'97 Accord EX, Auto, 4DR, 182K, Cloth interior ultra clean, Paint excellent shape (no fading), Small damage spot on rear bumper. Recent service unknown (Carmax employee bought it as a trade-in. They don't know service history but has clean Carfax).

Is $3200 too much to start with 182K miles? What could I reasonably expect in service life mileage? I like the car, but skiddish about the 182K miles.

im not really fimilar with hondas but in general that seems to be fairly high for a car that is almost 12 years old. my alero i purchased last year was 1000 with 153k on it and although it needed about 750 in maintenance (some of which was routine maintenance) it is still much lower in comparsion to your honda.

if your at a dealer(sounds like u may be)& you like the car i'm sure there's room to nogotiate!!!Good Luck

Well you have to calculate how many miles did the driver drive per year. So @182k miles / 11 years = 16545 miles per year. Which is pretty normal.

Also you have to check to see if the owner has service records like oil change interval and most importantly, timing belts and water pump.

Another thing, make sure that this car is from California and registered up to date because if its not from California you may not pass smog and worst of all may came from flood damage etc.

Make sure tranny shifts smoothly and speedometer is working. If there's engine check light and SRS light on while driving, avoid it.

Well maintain Accord should get almost 300k miles. My friend's 2001 Accord is at 250k miles and running strong.

The owner has only had it a couple of weeks. He's an employee at Carmax. He says Carmax allows employees to purchase 3 cars (trade-ins) per year. So, he has no idea of previous maintenance history.

I'm not questioning the price as much as I am the high mileage and what could I reasonably expect in service life. I know there's alot of variables (like was mentioned with oil changes, timing belt, etc), but was wondering what the majority of owners have gotten from theirs.

As for check engine light, I have a scanner that would come in handy. But what is the SRS light?
