I use toothpicks, but q-tips will work too if you need more putty.
If you want to paint the racing stripes a la Dodge Viper you have to mask the body. The best way is to use tamiya masking tape. We can write via pm, i'm a beginner too. If you uneed help feel free to ask!
Happy time in this forum! But caution: In a few days you're addicted

btw, whats the difference between Tamiya Masking tape, and regular masking tape, or the painting tape?

Tamiya tape is what you want to use for modeling. It has lower tack than others you mentioned; goes on and off clean. Burnish the edges down and you should get real nice results.

For stripes, shoot the lighter color first covering the area the stripes will be, allow plenty of time to cure, mask and shoot the darker color.

thanks, I tried masking tape once, but It got stuck in the edges. My LHS only sells 10mm wide tape, so I was looking for a wider alternative.

tamiya masking tape is much better suited for modelling purposes and behaves like almost no other masking tape you can buy and is especially different to the normal beige coloured masking tape.

3M makes a professional paint masking tape (can't remember the name) that is blue that comes very close to behaving like tamiya tape so is a good alternative but all in all, Tamiya's masking tape is the best.

But, how can you polish it?
When you polish with compound I think that the stripes will be higher than the base colour, because they've been sprayed over it...
