LIM leaking
Cursed 99 GTP

The problem I have is a poor idle. I start it up and it idles from 600 then jumps to 1800 and drops to 600 RPM. Then the check engine light came on with the code P0171. I sprayed carb spray at the base of the intake and the car idled out smooth. So I figured its those poor design gaskets.
How much of a pain is it to repair this intake leak on a 99 GTP?:frown: Repair shop told me 6 hours

Thats about right which includes cleaning the cylinder head and LIM surfaces of old gasket material and checking the LIM for trueness or no warpage but the time is for a professional. Doing it DIY will take longer especially if it is your first time. A lot of stuff has to be removed like the alternator, tensioner assembly, fuel rail and fuel injectors and the supercharger, etc. before you can get to the LIM and LIM gaskets.
Also, hi-temp RTV silicone sealant must be used at the 4 corners where the LIM ports gaskets meet the end piece gaskets. It takes 24 hours curing time for the sealant before you can fire up the engine.

If you stay organized and have decent mechanical ability, it is a job well within a DIY abilities. As bnaylor stated, it's going to take longer than 6 hours your first time, and you must have a few special tools, among them an inch/pounds calibrated torque wrench (manditory), flex head ratchet and wobble extentions (the last two not absolutely necessary, but they make the job MUCH easier).

IMO the most important part and it could be time consuming in addition to the raw labor time is getting all the logistics done before doing the work. Many DIY find themselves in a bad position due to inadequate research and lack of knowledge and experience. All parts needed for the job should be priced out and purchased to be on hand first before the repair job. Proper cleaning materials and solvents. Decisions like what brand supercharger, throttle body and LIMs gasket to go with. Are the LIM gaskets pinned or unpinned? Also, having the fuel injector o-rings and the two coolant bypass elbows to include o-rings at the LIM and waterpump on hand. Consumables like coolant since the cooling system should be drained sufficiently. Then there is "Murphy's Law". What can go wrong will go wrong. :grinyes:
