So, I'm seriously considering a pet hedgehog and was wondering if anyone here has one or has any experience with them and could provide some info/opinions. Or not.

um... just because you found one in your garden, doesn't mean you should really keep one as a pet...

It's called a yard.
I've never seen one here.

Where the hell did that come from?
I live in England now, by the way. It's super exciting.

in this country we call it a garden.
and are you sure you don't get hedgehogs?
try putting some dog/cat food out.
this is about the right time of year for them.
mind the foxes though...

Why do you hate foxes so much? They're kinda cuddly, in a non-hedgehog way.

And even if I could catch one here, it wouldn't be domesticated. So the likelihood of it wanting to snuggle in my camping chair (I've yet to get a couch) is nil.

I thought you were going to show this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAMo3WBibvk):popcorn:
My nephew had one and from what I remember they are rather shy creatures and like to roll up in a ball. They are a sight to look at.

Seriously. Did you have to?
I don't understand how they live here as everything I've read about them says they're only comfortable in temperatures above 70 degrees and if it goes lower then that they'll try to hibernate and probably die.

It's been awhile :grinyes:

As long as they are kept inside a home that remains above 65 or so they should be fine. I'm in NY and I know of some people that have them as pets. (We only get above 70 degrees a couple months out of the year ). They are kept in a small cage and the homes are heated when it's cool outside and they do just fine. They seem to be a less demanding(responsibility) pet than a cat or dog.

you live in england now!? weird. I was just telling my friend Willow how we need to go skydiving, and that I met a girl at Bonnaroo '07 who lives in FL and works at a skydiving place and need to make a roadtrip...
so hedgehogs... get one, they look awsome. Oh, and fuck animal cruelty; i'd paint the little guy blue and roll him around my Hot Wheels loop tracks and train him to steal gold rings from jewlery shops :sly:

DAMNIT
p.s hedgehogs are totally bad ass. I'd name mine Sonic for sure.
p.p.s, they can spin and run heaps fast too! And collect shit, like rings! But they like to jump on T.V's, so watch out.

Just don't give them milk. My friend tells me they're lactose-intolerant. He found an injured one in his garden as a kid, gave it some milk and it rapidly went from injured to dead. :(
Foxes around here are pretty tame, i see them quite often and have had one walk to work with me for about half a mile in broad daylight, people thought it was my dog. Living next to the woods i see them more than most people.

Ive had a hedgehog for a pet... they are great if you can get past a couple quirks about them...
1. they arent the best smelling cages ever...
2. they only have an expected lifespan of 3.5-6 years
3. they will stab you with their quills until they get to know you
4. they are very sensitive to temperature
5. they are very prone to cancer

Tonio...that picture is going to get my photography career started. National Geographic is going to pay me the big bucks.
