Lumina Idling Problem

Just recently as yesterday i started up my 97 lumina 3.1 and found that my car was chugging and running at about 1k rpm while in park, i found that once i gave it some gas the chugging went away. But again as soon as i would slow below 10km/h it would lower to 1k rpm and start to chug and if i sit long enough it will stall. Sometimes while this is happening my throttle will stick and keep the rpms high enough for this problem to cease but then i accelerate without touching the gas. I've been told it could be anything from just getting a tune up or a clogged air filter anybody give me a couple solutions that i could try please

Welcome to AF, this can be many things, tough to tell what " chugging" constitutes here, if it is a misfire than a plug or wire could do it, I'd look for vacuum leaks to start with, I assume no check engine lite?

Ya the check engine light came on, the motor kind of stutters and will finally stall if i sit long enough. I'm assuming right now its the fuel pump from looking around at other posts so i'm going to get it checked for pressure, but i was wondering what would be making my throttle stick.

Get the code and post back, anything else is guess work.

Assuming you mean the code from a mechanic from the scanner?

Forgot to mention this problem only started after i replaced my alternator

Again, get it scanned for the code.

Went and got the error codes and got P0101, P0121, P1106, P1133, P1870. My mechanic told me i could remove a piece and spray it with carb cleaner and this might fix my idle problem, or am i for sure gonna have to replace parts?

I had a similar problem a while back but mine was more of a hesitation than chugging and that ended up being a throttle position sensor. Anyways here is some detailed info on those specific codes:

P0101

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Performance Problem

P0121

Throttle Position Sensor/Switch Performance Problem

P1106
Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor circuit intermittent high voltage

p1133
Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) insufficient switching bank 1 sensor 1 (Rear Bank

P1870
That is a transmission slip code I believe. This car is known to have problems with the TCC regulator valve. This can be mistaken for missing between 40-60 mph.

I would seriously check out the tps sensor and mass airflow sensor..

Ya from what i've looked at across the internet these are the two main problems

I would change the TPS first. A bad reading from it can cause the PCM to trip all the other codes as well due to vacuum and rpm readings not falling into spec with where the PCM thinks the throttle is.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their ideas it turned out to be a hose/vacuum seal on top of the tps that had lost its seal and was allowing too much oxygen in
