i recently busted my axles and i need to replace them.
i have no idea which ones to buy because i have a d16z6 in ma 89 hatch.
should i get the ones for the car or the ones from the engine?
also my car has trouble starting in the mornings, i have to crank it for like a minute so it can turn on. can anyone help me with any of these problems?
thnx

start off with a tune-up for the starting issue... probably moisture getting into the dizzy or something similar.

For the axles, apparently, the EG and ED/EF axles are the same length, and have the same spline count... so whichever is cheaper for you... It DOES depend on what tranny you have tho... if you're hooked to a 4spd manual, or any Auto, you need the axles to that tranny... That's the only thing you would have to worry about, since you're not using HF spindles.

well i have the 89 zc 5-speed tranny?
so i can just get the axles from an eg and put them on my car??
cuz i also heard of people putting the 90-93 integra axles.
i just want some that will fit right with the new engine.

Do the Left side axle have a half-shaft? or is it a solid axle across? If its a solid axle, just get a civic axle, shouldn't matter what it came out of, just so long as its for a D series. Don't know about the 4 spd axles or the auto axles, so just stick with a 5 spd axle.

If it has a half shaft, my guess would be the Integra axles, but I haven't dealt any with the ZC.

4spd, auto, HF and STD axles will not fit... if you have the ZC tranny, and it is using the intermediate shaft, you need a right-side axle for both sides.

If you don't have an intermediate shaft on your transmission, then you just need standard Civic axles, 4th gen, 5th gen, whatever... as long as it's D-series, and isn't for an Auto, HF, 4spd, or STD.

Ok, I stand corrected then. Never had another lower than my DX so I wasn't aware the spindles were different....good thing I was planning on swapping around spindles between my DA parts car and the 2 EDs. The STD model got a stripped ball joint so I was swapping out the whole spindles with the other ED and finish putting the DA brakes on my white one.

Yeah, I have an HF... only reason I was still looking for axles before, b/c the HF axles have smaller hubs.

Also, Tony, if you have a spare block laying around, please look at it to confirm something for me...

I"m pretty sure that nearly all D-series blocks have the locations for the intermediate shaft bolts from the ZC tranny.

If this is the case, ANY transmission which uses the same number of splines as the ZC can use the intermediate shaft, as it just plugs into the tranny like the axles do, then a carrier bearing and retainer bolts onto the block to support it.

The axles you use w/ the intermediate shaft installed depend on your car... you use two of whichever passenger side axle you would normally use.

I already know this from RPR without going out and looking. Most blocks have the spot to install a half shaft, but they need to be tapped out, maybe drilled too, can't remember for sure, but they are there.

Well, if that's the case, then the intermediate shaft will fit in any tranny except 4spd and auto... you'd need an auto intermediate shaft (yes, they exist) for an auto tranny.

Drill/tap those holes, mount the intermediate shaft, and your axle swapping just got a hell of alot easier.

Bah, too much work. The only reason I never put the DA brakes on the front of my white hatch in the first place was because I didn't want to waste my slotted rotors and EBC greenstuff pads(which turned out to be bad by the time I got the car running again). Now that I have another car to donate the rotors to, Ill finish the DA brakes on the white hatch, which will end up with the complete DA setup when those are on since it already has the booster, mc, prop. valve and rear brakes :)

Lol.. it's alot of work if the holes aren't already there, but it might be worth it if you're really concerned about putting equal power to both wheels on launch... especially if you already have a Limited Slip tranny.
