305 crank/heads in 327?

The name really says it all... We can get a 327 block for a good price, but it needs heads/crank/connecting rods. Will there be many(if any) problems in using heads/crank/connecting rods out of a 305?

Yes and no... (:-

A 305 crank is the same part number as a 350 crank. IF the 327 is a "large journal" ('68 and 9), the crank will "fit" without modification. The rods, too, are "large journal" (2.100" crank pin as opposed to 2"). Replacement 350 pistons will do the job. The 305 crank, though, is "balanced" for the 305 pistons, so rebalance is necessary.

If the block is a "small journal", the mains must be ground down to fit. If it's a '62 or '63, the counterweights on the crank MAY need to be turned to a smaller diameter as well. We recently "stroked" a '65 327 for a boat, and the 350 crank fit fine after the mains were ground.

Reason I ask is my friend has a 305 in her truck now and she has her heart set on putting a 327 in it, and she found a block for sale for a decent price...

So i'll have to find out what year the 327 is, and go from there then.

Keep in mind that if you do the 305 crank into that 327, assuming it's properly balanced, and of the right journal size, you will wind up with a 350. The only difference between the 327 and the 350 is the stroke.

305 heads are not ideal for use on a 350 due to the small chamber (58cc typical) and small valve size.
