Paints

I am going to order some paints today, Not ordering body color, what colors should I get? I am building 1:43 resins mainly. I need interior stuff, chrome stuff, tail lights, engine stuff. For some of it can I buy touch up paint at my autoparts store and be ok? Other wise is there a good "kit" that has lots of colors I need that would be easier than ordering 15 different colors?

what "colour" do you want? Because without reference it is hard to know whether you need to mix the colour or purchase stock ones...

i mean chrome you can get alclad which is pretty good but you need black base paint anyway so that's 2 bottles, engine will have aluminium, flat aluminium, silver, black, flat black, gold and other colours such as red or yellow or blue... depending on car manufacturers... that's another 5~7 excluding chrome... and then interior you have grey, red, whatever again... so that's another 1~2... and then tail-lights you have clear red and orange... so you will end up with so many paints anyway. I normally have all those colours ready in my drawer and I suggest you do as well because if you are thinking model as a long term hobby you might as well get them because they will come in handy~ especially for metal finish paints...

As for specific body or interior colours try hiroboy, they do pre-mixing for customers and they could reproduce real car body colours if you have the chassis~

You'll need for sure:

flat white
flat black
gloss black
flat gray
silver
chrome
flat or semi-gloss red
clear red/orange/yellow for taillights

and others depending on needs...

You rather won't find a "car paint kit" similar to those for aircrafts or armored vehicles.

Different cars are different colors, inside and out. You get to pic what colors to paint things, based on how you think they should look.

There is really no kit of colors, nor should there be. Color selection is a very individual thing in modeling.

Find pics of what you will be building, and decide what you will need. Are the seats black or dark grey? Is the engine block chrome silver or metallic grey? You have to decide.

It is no different than going out to a field with a canvas to paint a landscape and asking "what colors do I need?". Easy- what colors do you see?

i haven't seen such kits before... do you have a local hobby shop at your location? because it is worth having a look there first before you order them. Normally Tamiya paints are easy to source and they produce most of the colours you will need... and they are perfect for airbrush, dry brushing and mixing... they are easy to use and tidy... after awhile you can move on to other brands of paint and explore them... Alclad is harder to source but is still possible to find in shops. Hiroboy is a online store with one shop in UK... so you wouldn't find that anywhere else~~

Otherwise yes most likely you will have to order them individually.

I don't have a hobby shop local no, I found one online that is only 3 hours from me, so I guess I will be going There. We don't even have a Hobby Lobby or Michaels near us. That is what I get for living in WY.

I am about to place a order at meggahobby.com for tamiya paint, they are $2.10 for 1/3 oz good price? Here is what I am getting flat white, flat black,
gloss black, flat gray, silver, chrome, flat red, clear red/orange/yellow, flat aluminum. Am I missing anything that is a staple to your collection? It is not body color paint, just interior trim and body trim. For interiors I am mainly doing race cars, both vintage and newer cars.

My best advice: get ahold of a copy of the Tamiya brochure.
It doesn't matter too much what year because all you want is the colour chart. Some websites even list all the colours, in fact the Tamiya site probably has it too but I'm too lazy right now to look for it.

Then pick out the colours you want.

Generally, the ones I use the most: Flat Black, Semi-Gloss black (although TS 29 is much more useful) and Flat Aluminium.
Everything else is kit dependent and of personal preference.
You will also want to get a bottle of the thinner (X-20A) and bottle of the Clear because they are handy.

If you can afford it, buy them all because it is always nice to have options.

The colors are listed on the site I am on and on Tamiyas.
I can get all of the colors 85 or something for $170 IIRC
