On my mother's Century the headlights stay on for about a minute after the ignition switch is cut off and the key removed. Is there a way to override this feature so the headlight go out immediately when the car is switched off?

Wally you can do one of two things. Just manually override the delayed headlamp illumination by taking the headlamp switch from the off to parking lamp on position and back to off before getting out of the car or just disable it by:

All doors closed and ignition key in RUN position.
Press and hold power door lock button at the driver's door. Then cycle headlamp switch on and off two times.
Release power door lock button.
Then press and hold the power door lock button again.
Turn the headlamp switch on and off two times.
Release the power door lock button.
After releasing power door lock button a single chime will be heard to indicate it has been disabled.

Note: All steps above must be carried out in a time period of less than 10 seconds.

Thanks Bob, I'll have to study this procedure to get all that done in 10 seconds. Sadly, this feature is no longer needed.

You're welcome. No longer needed....why?

It can get annoying sometimes. Especially when you park at night and get out of the car and then someone yells "you left your headlights on!" The reply is thats OK they will shut off automatically.
