I have a 97 MC Z34. Was at the gym yesterday, ran into walmart to get some oil (instrument panel was reading low oil.) Came back out to my car, started it, started fine, then shut it off as i remembered I wanted to put oil in it. After I did I tried starting it and all I got was rapid clicking from the solenoid. Engine did not turn.My instrument lights are on, and headlights are on, they all dim somewhat when I try starting. Went back later in the evening tried to start it again, and the same thing. Thinking (hoping )it was the battery I tried jumpstarting it. Again same thing, just rapid clicking. I'm thinking that the starter is bad but I guess it could still be the battery (Ive never replaced the battery and Ive had the car for about 3 years. )
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm torn between buying a battery or buying a starter.

One click suspect the starter.
Many rapid clicks in a row suspect the battery.

Jump start a side terminal battery can be more difficult than it should be.
This is a very common scenario especially on the hottest days of summer and as we start to swing into the fall season with cooler temps in the great northland!
I had a jump start to do on a Cadillac. No matter what I did I could not get it to go with the jumper cables on the flat bed. It is equipped with 2 1000 cca batteries so I know there is plenty there if needed. All I could get the car to do is rapid clicks. Fortunately I was close to the shop and ran back for a jumper pack. Hooked it up and the cady fired right up.
Customers are always shocked when we tell them its just the battery. It doesn't seem right that they would start the vehicle one minute and then be totally junk the next. Its an electrical device and just like a light bulb or any other electrical item it can work one minute and fail the next!
If there is any doubt have it tested.
