Heating/AC control knob too tight to turn,, breaking knobs.

1998 Dodge Stratus, 2.4 Is this bad news or is it ok to spray some wd-40 in there to loosen up the controls. I broke the hot/cold knob, and the fresh air knob. Thanks John C.
