So, I've never really noticed until now but I have almost an inch of play in my steering wheel. I take it that this is not normal for the 3S?

my 97 sl does't have hardly any play. I dunno if its normal or not. If it is normal, I must just be lucky. My guess is something needs to be tightened/replaced

Just as long as it can be fixed.

You can tighten up the worm gear in the steering box but that takes some experience. The next is the idler arm out of the gear box. This arm is solid but you now walk to that pivot off the arm and you start to move suspension parts and find how sloppy the ball joints are/how the wheel bearings are loose and you move the steering wheel before the bearings move/any suspension arm with a grease fitting is a loose ball joint about to stay in place before you take the slop out of the ball joint is you see that wear is how you gained inches in the steering wheel play.
