Shocks

I have an '03 Z-71 Tahoe with the Ford torsion cams installed. I was pleased with the ride & bounce control with the stock (Z71) front shocks, however they were leaking. I replaced them with KYB Mono Max's and now it bounces all over the place, so I'll need another option.
Anyone out there with a similar problem that found a shock that tames the bouncing?

I ended up going with Bilsteins on my '01 Z-71 Yukon and it made a big improvement on ride quality. The bouncing on the highway went away entirely. However, it's not the smoothest riding shock in the world - but it's a truck.

I have 4 KYB Mono Max Shocks on my 1999 Chevrolet 2 Door Z71 Tahoe and the truck rides like a dream (Remember it is a Short Wheelbase). I do have to agree with the fact that there is some increase in Highway bounce when I hit bridges at 70mph, however, this shocks off-road performance is exceptional. Not only that I think the trucks handling on curving roads is exceptional as well. I can rock the stearing wheel from left to right with very limited body roll. These are really hard to beat on my truck. I would have to say that these shocks actually ride better than when I had the Bilsteins on the truck new.

I put last year, bilstiens on the front/rear of my silverado and over the originals they give a solid good ride...shockwarhouse supplied and they come with the lifetime warrantee...very good price also...

on the hywy at 70mph it is smooth/firm... over those speed bumps in parking lot its bumpy..

As my Tahoe has the Ford torsion cams it is especially preloaded & with the KYB Mono Max's it launches itself (no, the tires don't leave the ground, but they likely would under certain conditions) and bounces a few times, even just backing out of the driveway.
The stock (Z71) shocks, even while leaking slightly, performed well & the truck was well-behaved.
I was hoping that someone who has installed the Ford Cams, or cranked up the factory torsion bars might have encountered (and solved) this. Anyone?

I guess that I could merely replace the KYB's with factory (Z71) shocks, but I figured that maybe there was something better out there.

when you increase the hieght of the vehicle too much with the torsion bars this result is to be expected as the front shocks are out of the suspension control on the up swing...you basicly hit a wall and it could very well take the wheels off the ground...


drop vehicle hieght slowly to a point where this ride is acceptable to you...


yes I adjusted my torsion bars to compensate for a slight drop after break in...also this hieght change affects the toe adjustment...

I have put on over 45K mi. with the torsion cams installed (they were installed at 56K mi.) and just now needed to replace the factory (Z71) shocks. I did not have this bouncing issue with my 99K, leaking, factory shocks.

I know your not gonna believe this but,,,,, your replacement shocks may be slightly shorter......than the OEM...

That may be true. But the shocks topping out is not the issue.
The dampening of the shock on the UP stroke is all but non-existent and then it does little to dampen the bouncing; i.e. after going over a speed-bump at a slow speed the front end bounces 4 or 5 times. Again, this was not an issue with the stock shocks.

when I purchased the replacement shocks for my vehicle after 90,000mi the replacements where 1/2 inch shorter...

with the truck setting at the current hieght measure the shock length then jack up vehicle so that the wheel just leaves the ground measure the length again ...see what the difference is...then you have a number...

shocks need to move 2inches or so to compress the oil...for damping..up and down..

I have a set of Rancho RS9000XL on my 99 tahoe. I love'em. They come with choices for diameter of the shock. I went with the monster 2.75" diameter shock but I had to relocate the shock it self to make it work. I used shock hoops to do this. But they do come with standard diameters as well that will work with the factory loaction. Most places like 4wheelparts.com sell them for $99 a piece or buy 3 get the 4th free. They are 9 way adjustables.

i did research before i bought mine and should have listned!!
my front sagged quite a bit, so i went for KYBs on the front, as internet said: very powerful, will raise front some 2 inches. monotubes. so they did!!

same time, inernet said: be prepaired to rough ride. so they did! it's my 2nd experience with KYBs, i had adjustables on galant before, and it was loss of money. i do not think i'll buy KYB product again.

out of curiosity, i installed set of billsteins on the rear axle. of course, it's hard to tell, as i sit towards the front, but they do feel more comfortable than KYBs.

final result was very good cornering, very little cornering lean, stiff suspension, but front IS ROUGH. i have about 5 mths on those shocks, they softened some, but not good enough.
of course, everything changes when you drop about half a cubic yard of dirt into the bed. smoooooth.
