Your take on modelling...

Recently, I've noticed a bit of a flair towards an attitude of, "That's not how it is in real life, your project is a failure" or "that's not possible, most cars have a firewall for a reason". Thing is, that's always been the great thing about modelling for me. You can do whatever you want with your little car, without spending heaps of money. Drop a hemi into a corvette, or a VW Golf, if you feel like it. Shave door handles judiciously. Drop the car so low that the wheels would be incapable of turning if the car was real. Put such a huge engine into a car that the hood no longer fits. Take a 4 door sedan and turn it into a convertible. Jack a truck. Slam a truck. Paint your interior whatever colour you feel like.
If you're with me on this, then feel good about the stuff you're working on, and don't worry about what the critics have to say. This hobby is for your enjoyment, not to impress a bunch of people on the internet.
That's my speil. Take 'er easy. http://www.automobileforum.com/forums/html//emoticons/cheers.gif

I agree!
Modeling is all about fun and letting rip with your imagination. So what if it wouldn't work in real life, looking good in miniature is our concern here!

I agree. When I build a model, it's for me. I try to make them as realistic as I possibly can with my skills, but that's because I'm building cars I dream about having in real life and will probably never get my hands on. So, I make a miniature instead. If you're into making a car with a jet engine on the roof, wings, and no firewall, all the power to you. You are indeed, building the model for you. Building things like other people want you too is no fun. It's your money, your plastic, your model, and most importantly, your imagination. That's my take

now thats hat modeling is about, if u want to drop a little honda 4 banger into a skyline(would NEVER do it myself) go ahead, if u want to hack off the top of a supra and make a convertible, go ahead, but if u caan also go full on with detail, panel lines, windo frames, engine detailing, etc..., but i say do both, and then u will get the best of oth worlds:D

I respect anybody's opinion as much as any other, but to me my model car collection is like a miniature museum, where I can look at all the racecars that I've been admiring as much as I want.
I have been building model cars for over 30 years now, and my collection counts exactly 1 fantasy vehicle, and I made that one because it was the issue of a modeling contest by Revell : to make a non-existing model of an existing kit (won second prize with it too).
So for me, I try to build any car as realistic as I possibly can, I have fun in looking up reference material, going to races and take pics of the cars I am going to build, etc...
But once again, I have no problem with people transforming their model into fantasy stuff, it's a free world and as long as you are having a great time, why the heck not?

My sentiments exactly.
But I would say that negative comments about my cars help, at first you think ahhh, then next model you do that thing which was pointed out and get a better model, my cars have improved 100% since being on here, so criticism is has it benefits.

A little constuctive critisisme didn't harm anyone yett.
Butt what the topic starter is refering to is that some peeps don't make any points to improve the model but start shouting right away "That car is butt ugly" and stuff like that
But i agree just build the car you like and do the best you can do.
And remember the only limit is youre imagination.

There would have to be almost as many reasons and opinions about building models as there are modellers. Everybody's take on the issue will be different. The world is a mighty big place so there is plenty of room for many people to disagree yet still be right :p
Much like Senake I build models because I am a fan of rally and racing history, so I try and build as accurate a replica as possible. I've found it helpful in the past to have others point out details that could be improved when I display them here on AF.
It is not by bag to do all the fantasy stuff, or dream cars but I have no problem with those that do so. So long as they respect my slant then I'll do the same for them. Even if those type of models don't interest me there is always the possibility a useful tip or technique may be picked up :D
Can't say I've noticed a rise in the "your project is a failure" type comments. Generally posters on this forum try and exccentuate the positives in any models people are brave enough to offer up for criticism. Most comments regarding problems or deficiencies are done with the intention of offering assistance so that modeling skills can be improved. Also, if one offers criticism then you'd better be prepared to back it up with some evidence!
Bottom line is you should build for you. If others like your work that is just a bonus :flash:

:eshooter: I think everyone has a great point of view on the posing question fo the fact that no one person will ever be right. Most importantly I model for the exploration of my imagination of and for the feeling of accomplishment when I am finished putting something together that didn't come already painted nor assembled. Speaking for myself, I definitely appreciate the opinions everyone has because just as one you guys said earlier it too makes me better and more aware of the mistakes I make with possible solutions. Where in the world can you get honest advice that makes you better at you skill with out paying a consultation fee......lol:D For real though I like both the supper detailed models and then at times you don't feel like supper detailing them, but you shoot for a comedic cartoonish look. Hey thanks to AF for being here and allowing me to learn from others without snobby, know it alls, and also for letting me speak my piece.

I agree wholehardedly with this, I feel that with car modellimg there is no right or wrong, just what you want to do at the time, I am often subjected by my so called modeling friends at my local club to long drawn out arguments about shades of paint on aircraft, 'that aircraft didn't ever carry that bomb', 'that panel line is in the wrong place my 2 mm etc etc. As people have said in this forum, modelling is supposed to be a hobby and fun, but that goes out of the window when you research and then talk a subject to death. I sometimes feel like yelling at them to get a life and go and build the f***ing model. Some of the members at my local club do this all the time and havent turned in a new model for the five years ive been going, nuff said, lets all get back to what we do best and thats post pics of completed models.
