Please help 94 tauraus

Hi today my 94 taurus died. I went to shift from reverse to drive and it wouldn't let me then it just died. What happened? I tried cranking it again and all the electrical stuff works but it won't actually crank up? Oh and it won't stay in park i had to use the emergency brake to keep it form rolling away.

Did you shift back into Park or Neutral before trying to restart? The Transmission Range Switch (TRS) will prevent the starter from engaging if the TRS is not in Park or Neutral.
Sounds like there is an issue in the linkage for the shift lever that is not shifting the transmission in/out of gear as well as not moving the TRS correctly.
Does your Taurus have column shift or console shift?
