March 12 - China is trying to censor the Rolling Stones. Four of their signature tunes have been banned in Beijing and shackled in Shanghai, sites of the band’s first-ever appearances in mainland China next month.
The band, which is scheduled to perform April 1 in Shanghai and April 4 in Beijing, will not be allowed to play “Brown Sugar,” “Honky Tonk Woman,” “Beast of Burden” or “Let’s Spend the Night Together,” Chen Jixin, head of Beijing Time New Century Entertainment, a concert organizer behind the two China dates, said Wednesday.
The four songs, all of which include sexual references, were originally cut from the mainland release of the band's 40 Licks” compilation album by China’s culture ministry, Chen said.
The album was released by EMI Records China earlier this year. It was the first Rolling Stones album to legally hit the China market; pirated Stones CDs are widely available in Shanghai and Beijing.
Chen said she didn't know why the government had banned the four songs. The Chinese Ministry of Culture said no one was immediately available for comment.
Only songs on the officially released 40 Licks” album will be allowed during the China shows, Chen said.
When the Stones played the Ed Sullivan show in 1967, Mick Jagger satisfied American censors by singing Let's spend some time together.
The band first applied to play China in the 1970s

You would think that in a world so desensitized to sex, violence and other such things, as well as a world where people sleep with someone they've only just met, that by now no one would really care. Oh well, if China wants to "protect" the ears of its citizens they can. But it's not like it will make a damn bit of difference, after all, as it was said, there are pirated copies of 40 licks, and Im sure that Stones fans find ways to get their favorite bands songs.

Well China is run by a facist government and the government decides what they can and cannot listen to. Unlike the US where we do what we want within the boundries of Law which is always subject to change. Of course I'm sure this statement will open up a can of worms isn't that right Taranaki?:greenchai

Im sure the statement "It's only illegal if you get caught" is also believed in in China, as it is here.

Jesus Christ! You really are a piece of work. The forum is called "Politics, Investments & Current Affairs" not "Bash the United States" I should know that is the only thing you seem capable of doing in here.
I though posting about other things going on in the world might be of interest. If I see something of note about Germany, Russia or anyplace else I'll post it. To bad your view is so narrow.
For once in your sad wanderings around here can you stay on the topic or does everything you do in here have to be about bashing the US or Bush in particular?

Let me clear a couple things up. I do stand up for what I feel is right. I have no problem with other people doing the same.
As I've said just few posts ago, this forum is not just about US policy and Iraq. There are other things going on in the world. Although you wouldn't know it from the postings of a few individuals in here. They can't seem to talk about anything else.
This thread had nothing to do with the US. It was an interesting article that my wife pointed out to me. (She is Chinese for those who don't know) and since it was of interest to her, I thought it might be here as well.
If you can't see past Iraq then feel free to leave the thread. Otherwise it would be nice to hear opinions on the article itself.

Interesting note Yogs, my girlfriend is American. I just got back from spending a week with her in Seattle :)
I'm just noticing a pattern where you post these little stories about nations that are opposing the US's war with Iraq.
I took a political science course, which mostly dealt with propaganda, from the classic examples from the Greco-Roman era to modern day work such as Triumph Of The Will, and CNN. These sort of little stories are a good example of subtle propaganda, even if that was not your intention. I apologize if I have offended you.
