Voluntary recall on Elantra Exhaust Manifold...

Good morning,

I have an interesting issue. I took my Elantra in last week for a state inspection service and Transmission flush. When I got it back the dealer said I needed a new exhaust manifold due to a crack. I knew that there had been a recall in the past because they had checked my vehicle for this a couple years ago. I asked him why they didn't just replace it under that recall. He stated that the recall was "closed" and I was going to have to pony up the money for it.

I told him I'd get back to him after I spoke to Hyundai since this didn't seem right if they had a problem with their manifolds they should replace them. So this morning I was looking around on the Internet for this issue and found on Hyundai's website http://www.hyundaiusa.com/global/contactus/faq_campaigns.aspx (http://www.hyundaiusa.com/global/contactus/faq_campaigns.aspx)

the following Question/Answer

Is there any charge for the repair of V04?http://www.hyundaiusa.com/images/global/contactus/asset_upload_file770_9333.gifNo, the repair is performed at no charge to the customer. In addition, if the manifold is not cracked, Hyundai will extend the warranty on this part to 10 years and unlimited mileage.

so I called Hyundai USA and asked about them replacing my manifold for free since this recall says they've extended the warranty to unlimited miles....she took my info and then put me on hold and called the dealer and when she got back to me told me that the dealer had inspected my car and didn't find any cracks and therefore I must have cracked the manifold myself...she also said that if they had found a crack and replaced the manifold then they would extend the warranty on the new manifold....this doesn't make any sense to me...

I also found a similar statement on the EPA's website...

Anyone had their manifold crack after it had been inspected and gotten a new manifold from Hyundai?

Thanks!!!!

Frank

I got mine inspected under this recall, but there was no crack. To me, saying the warranty is extended to 10 yrs/unlimited miles (which is also what I was told) means that if it ever does develop a crack within that time frame they should replace it as part of the recall/warranty procedure. I haven't had a problem, but it seems reasonable that they would replace it. I'd show them that recall language and get them to fix it if you're still under the time limit.

So, after a couple phone calls to Hyundai, and faxing them a copy of their own statement from their website about extending the warranty on all manifolds that didn't show a crack when inspected, as well as the statement on the EPA's website, I got a call back from Hyundai saying they'd replace my manifold for free!!!!

I've got the appt set up next week to take it into the dealership.

Guess that shows if you're persistent enough it sometimes pays off.

Regards,

Frank
