Transmission slipping at 25-30mph

Hi, my sisters transmission slips as said above and going up over hills. I Have a good bit of mechanical knowledge but not in the transmission department. She doesn't have the money for a new refurbished one, and asked if i could take a whack at it. I called a transmission shop and asked them whats the Normal cause for transmission slipping and all they said was that they charge anywhere from 1,100-1,400 for them to do it. I'm comfortable going in and doing it myself with help from a friend but i need to first know what the problem might be.
I was thinking maybe the torque converter or some other simple fix. Any Ideas on what i could and need to replace. The cars not drivable as it is so even if i have it apart for 2-3 days thats no problem.
What are the main reasons, or main replacements that transmission shops would do?
i've already replaced the fluid, filter, gaskets about a month ago but its dead now. Put lucas oils trans fix, still slipping.
What specialty tools will i need?
I Know i can do this without taking it to a shop and paying some one else tons of money that she could be saving by having me do it.

are you going to rebuild it yourself or replace it?
removal and installation isnt so bad. It has to come out the bottom and the motor will have to be held in by hooks.
If your rebuilding it, its a little more involved, when your in there, you'll want to replace all the clutches and bands and seals and gaskets. Its a pretty big job and also might require some special tools for the 4t65e. I wouldn't recommend doing a rebuild for beginners.
BTW, what kind of car is this and how many miles are on it?

the biggest cause of slipping is worn out clutches. if you have the mechanic experience i would take the tranny out yourself, and have someone rebuild it for you. it would cut your cost in half.
if you have no experience with trannies, i wouldnt even try tackling the rebuild job yourself. there is WAYYYY more to a tranny then you would think there is...
another idea...you could order a shift kit and put it in yourself...that is pretty easy. sometimes that will fix your lighter slips. i would say its worth the $40.00 for a try. i have the ZZP (https://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix/products1.php?id=570&catid=105) (click link) shift kit in my SE. it comes with detailed instructions on how to put it in.
