96 Intrepid Tranny Issue

Ok, 96 Intrepid, has been driving fine. On Friday went to work like normal and just a little ways up the road went to stop at a red light and the car lunged and stalled. Started right back up. Like I was driving a manual car and stopped with out pushing in the clutch. Next light did the same thing. The next few lights I bumped it on neutural to stop and when I could go I put in drive. Well farther up road stop light, nuetural and went to start off and tranny started winning, like pump low on fluid. Checked fluid and it smelt and looked to be right amount. After that stop no shift and trans winned rest of way to work, 3 miles. The Speedo and Tach were working, no Check Engine light.
At work checked fluid like I mentioned above and tried to drive car in parking lot. Did not winne but never shifted, would winne from time to time, stop and nothing. Stop engine and recrank would not move for a minute or two then go. Took back to parking spot going to back in, stopped, nothing. Had to push car in spot.
This all happened at once, car is in good shape and I hate that this issue has come up. I'll dolly it to my mechanic on Tuesday 9/2/2008. Let him check codes.
Does this sound simple, sensor or computer, or worse like a pump?
When I get it to go in gear, you can hold the brake and accel and it has good pull, no slip. Fluid is clean looking and no smell!
Thanks for your responces

Check the torque convertor! My daughters did this and darn near drove me crazy chasing all of the other possibilties. I thought torque convertor all along but let some guys talk me out of it and wound up chasing 'bad wires", computers, etc.
