I have an opportunity to buy a 1999 Taurus Wagon with 90K on it. Check engine light is on. Auto Zone said it is regard to code #1744, but couldn't tell me anything else. Doesn't make sense to buy something with a check engine light on.Just checking to see if it in regard to something easy to fix. Seller (dealer) doesn't know or care why it is on. They are selling "as is". Can anyone help?

Welcome to the forum!

Try using the "Search this forum" feature from the Taurus forum main page. Search for the keyword "P1744." There are a few posts regarding this code and some suggestions on how simple a fix this could be, or how expensive a fix this could be.

Thanks very much. I searched the forum and read through the posts and decided it would be foolish to buy a car "as is" with a problem related to that code number. Thanks for your help.

According to my code book, there is NO such code that starts with a 1 as in the code you posted 1744. All the codes in my bood start with a (0)

Generic OBD-II powertrain codes have the format P0xyz. These will be the same from one manufacturer to the next. However, the P1xyz powertrain codes are "manufacturer-specific" codes and can change from one manufacturer to the next. Your code book probably does not address manufacturer-specific codes.
