i want 2 get as much grunt as i can out of my 84 classic as i can (with about $1000). also i dont want 2 kill my gas mileage.
And i have a 2 barrel carb, would putting on a 4 barrel destroy my gas mileage?
please help! thx in advance

2bbl on a 305, in an '84? Something isn't right. It should have a Qjet on it.
A Qjet will likely see better economy than the 2bbl.
Best thing you can do for it is an Edelbrock Performer EGR intake and a decent cam.

Im thinking of just getting some 350 heads and keeping the original carb, but thats just me, and it depends if you can afford it too of course

NO. DO NOT USE 350 HEADS.
Not only will they lower the compression ratio so low that the engine will not make power, they will also cause mechanical interference issues between the intake valves and the cylinder block.
If you want to replace the heads, use World S/R Torquer 305 heads. These have the 1.94 intake valves and a combustion chamber design suited to make power on a 305 - plus, they're not expensive as far as aftermarket heads are concerned.

2 barrel carb wasn't offered on that year and/or engine i'm not sure. Maybe your getting confused and seeing the secondaries in the back thinking its a 2 barrel. Cause i'm pretty sure the other primaries are buried inside the carb in the front where you can't directly see it.

HELLO. My "84" caprice has the "COMPUTER CONTROLED QJET". Your's probably does also. If you want to get some more grunt from your stock engine just install a new timing set that allows you to set the cam at 4 degrees advanced. This allows the camshaft events to start early giving more low end torque. This really helps to pull these "B" bodied barges around. Helps the lowend torque & mpg. You can install a high flow cat. that helps quite a bit in the exhaust flow. Even a stock single exhaust system. A performance manifold may help to. ie. EDELBROCK SP2P, PERFORMER etc.
hope this helps.
