trans problems

i have a 98 eclipse gst and it wont go into forth gear i someone told me the syncro is off or something what else could it be and how much would it cost

I wish I could help, but I have the same problem. My 95 eclipse started jumping out of 3rd gear and then 5th. We drove for a while just holding the shifter to keep it in gear but now, it doesn't want to go into 5th at all. I've tried to find the syncros, but the only way I've found to buy them is with a transmission rebuild kit. I'm not sure if the transmission has to be rebuilt to replace them or not. Has anyone rebuilt the transmission themselves? I am thinking of attempting it. My car has been sitting for a couple of months and as I drive around in my suburban, I really miss that 35mpg! :banghead:

Syncros probably are bad if it's popping out of gear while driving. Only way to do is a rebuild. Not easy if you've never done it before. Take it to a shop and get it done right. Can get rebuilt trannys for about $1000 or so plus labor.
