Re-keying a Metro Hatchback door lock

One thing that bugs me about a '94 Geo Metro that I bought about 5 years ago is that the keys don't open the rear hatch. I have to lean way back and push on a lever to open the lock. Now that's a little embarrassing when you're chauffeuring movie stars around (I haven't yet!). I talked to someone who re-keys locks at Home Depot, and they said that those door locks can be re-keyed, cause they're a sealed unit. Anybody know if this can be done?

Oops my keyboard miss-fired. The previous should say "can't be re-keyed"!

I have metro's where the keys like to give you crap on the trunk and doors. Spray some WD-40 in there and give it a good firm "jiggle jiggle". Repeat if necessary. Worked for me...

Or get a replacemnt from a junkyard and make sure it has a key to go with it.

wd40 is kind of a temporary fix. best to use graphite powder as it doesn't attract dirt like the oil based lubes. my lock was terrible to the extent that using graphite through the keyhole wouldn't help. i ended up having to take the lock assembly off and put the graphite lube in every orifice i could and then i cycled the key until it unlocked. then i put more graphite on it and cycled the key dozens of times. now the lock works perfectly.

if you take lock out and a copy of your ignition/door key to a locksmith for about $15-20 they can re-key the lock so it matches the other ones
