1994 Corvette LT1

My corvette has been sitting in the garage since May. I have a back problem so I can't get it ready to drive but yesterday I noticed a large pool of transmission fluid under the car. It sat for 4 weeks with nothing and then it looks like someone dumped a quart under the car and then it doesn't get any bigger. This has happened twice now. The car had not been started so what would cause the fluid to leak out? As soon as I am better I will get under and look but I was curious if anyone else had this problem. I do start it and let it run to operating temp about every six weeks and it doesn't seem to leak idling. Does anyone have any idea where I should look or had the same thing happen ?

Have a look underneath if you can to see exactly where the leak is coming from.

Sometimes transmissions leak a bit around the driveshaft seal at the rear of the transmission if the car sits for a long time.
If the driveshaft support bushing at the rear of the trans is a bit old, it allows the driveshaft to place a bit too much downward pressure on the seal, allowing a slight leak....... especially if the seal is a bit old and hardened.

IMO this is no big deal. My '68 T-Bird does the same thing, but since I rarely drive it, I just top up the trans before every drive.

If you are going back t driving the car regularly, chances are the problem will go away. If it bothers you, have a mechanic raise the car and wiggle the driveshaft to check for slop and if necessary change the rear seal and maybe the tailstock bushing.

Also, have a look at the transmission pan gasket. It may have shrunk or become hardened, especially if its a cork gasket. If this is the case, usually tightening the pan bolts will not work at all. You should drop the pan, clean the surfaces and replace the gasket. While you are at it, change the filter too!!
