if he's gotta LS, then it'll be close...he tips the scales at jus over 3300 lbs, so that'll be an advantage, but he also has 160hp/185trq V6, so ur gonna get beat off the line. if its the Z34 V6, then ur in some trouble...215hp/220trq BUT it does weigh over 3400 lbs...i still think if its the Z34, ur not gonna see much cept the back of his car...but if its the LS, then u've gotta chance...go out an see wut happens. :D but keep it safe

Let me tell you about my experience.
This guy that I used to work with named Steve and he has a 1987 Monte Carlo SS. He has a 305 V8. I have an Acura Integra LS with a Weapon R Intake and exhaust system, Ground Control coilovers, and KYB AGX gas adjustable shocks. We lived pretty close to each other so in the mornings sometimes I would see him. One morning I was on my way to work and sitting at a red light. He pulled up besides me and started reving. My intake and exhaust system is loud, but his souds like ongoing thunder. I realised he wanted to race but as soon as I realised it the light turned green. Let's just say that he took off and gained about 5 car lengths on me. When I hit about 80mph I noticed that he wasn't pulling away from me any longer. By the time I hit 90mph I had gained on him. And as soon as we started weaving through curves I took over and blew by at 100 at least. He later told me that his car just can't handle through curves but he agreed that if it wasn't curves that got him it would have been the top end.

9 out of 10 times. thats the way it will be with a camarro or a montle like that
But a 305... he should've taken you the entire way... ill give him the benefit on this... "curves"

I know I would have been toast on straights. But he admits that his car is too sluggish when it comes to handling. My car is no racer by any means but it is still pretty quick and it sticks and hangs really well.

Chevy Monte-Carlo LS Acceleration (0-60 mph): 8.8 sec
Chevy Monte-Carlo Z-34 Acceleration (0-60 mph): 8.0 sec
1997 Acura Integra LS Acceleration (0-60): 8.2 sec
Although, since your car is an auto it may make a difference. The Monte-Carlo was only available with an auto so it may be close, though you should have him slightly (unless it's the Z-34). But you'll know that right away cause they got that big gay sticker on the side.
According to a crude online quarter mile calculator...
Chevy Monte-Carlo LS Quarter Mile in 16.99sec
Chevy Monte-Carlo Z-34 Quarter Mile in 15.60sec
1997 Acura Integra LS Quarter Mile in 16.49sec
Chevy Monte-Carlo Z-34 Acceleration (0-60 mph): 8.0 sec

So are you up to the challenge?
I have sent the product out to other ppl claiming to do their own independant tests and never heard anything back. If you know anyone in Calgary Canada that wants to do it let me know.

Integra .vs. Monte Carlo.
Well his Monte Carlo may win, but if he doesn't have the Z34 then you have a chance. Just ask someone who knows a lot about cars to adjust some things in your engine to give you the "edge" on his car. You can really just buy a high performance chip to increase your horsepower by at least 10+ horsepower which could be the difference between smoking him or being smoked. Check out some sites for performance upgrades and some tips on it...later

Just cruising through and saw the thread... Saw this statement. Couldnt help but laugh...
Anywho, If the race is only for the length of time it takes for one person to get infront of the other... then I think his higher torque might mean doom for you. I think his off the line performance will give you some major catching up to do, but unfortunately that maybe too late for you to win.
Just go out and do it... tell us how it goes.

Heheh... just don't try to race a '71 Monte SS (454) with a Vette ZF6 tranny swapped in there. You'll find yourself needing to change your pants very, very quickly. :)
As per the 87 Monte SS 305 story, and the case with most older GM cars, their transmission ratios are wide. Most older GM's either have a 4 speed manual, or a 3-4 speed auto. You're looking at ratios like 2.54 / 1.80 / 1.33 / 1.00 ... big jumps. The problem is that neither their tranny nor their body is designed to make use of high-end 4th gear. Once you get into the 100mph range, you will beat them simply because they can't go much faster! Once you start talking about 5- and 6-speed domestics, the story changes quite a bit, and many of those will keep pulling until they hit second-to-top-gear, at which time we'll gain some ground, passing them during top-gear (provided our top-speed is higher than theirs).
Think about this: 6th gear in a late-model camaro hass a 0.50:1 ratio! Great for gas, HORRIBLE for acceleration. Then again, that's how a high-performance 350 can get over 20mpg on the highway. Just don't ever try to use 6th until you reach 70mph or higher! :)
