Get a flat tip screw driver, there is a U-clip holding the shift knob to the shifter. Pry it out, and pull it straight up. ( might be easier to put car in 1st to see it)
There is a little cover over a screw in the front try area. Pop it off and remove that screw
Under your window switches, or just an empty misc. holder for a manual windows car, pop this off with a screw driver and there will be a screw under there.
In the very bottom of the arm rest storage area, there are 2 screws which need to come out.
Wiggle the boot off the e-brake while remove the console, its very flex able and can be forced around a bit to get it over certain things. Just don't go hulk hogan on it since it can still break.

Its just a matter of rotating it around in the right direction bud. I know the ebrake is a pain to get over, but i assure you it comes off without unbolting the ebrake.

Yep, it was for me also. The owners manual for my 2000 said the light was an LED, so I go to the parts department of a couple stealerships and they know squat about it. I have a Chilton's, and just how you said it came right out.:)
The bulb in mine and probably yours is a 194 for what it's worth. I put one of the 194LL bulbs in so I don't have to deal with it again.
