I just heard this on MSNBC. This is one of the most amazing stories I have ever heard. I am really happy for Elizabeth Smart's parents, but you are right that its odd that this girl is 15 and didn't scream bloody murder, but there's no telling what she was told by her abducter. Anyways its still a happy ending at least.

Just a random comment, but it could be Stockholm Syndrome. Or she was simply threatened by her abductor. Who knows

so it's the kid's fault she was kidnapped and missing for 9 months.  someone who has absolutely NO IDEA what went on during that time knows it all, right? :finger4: don't you think if it were that simple, she would have said something or attempted to escape? obviously, knowing the whole story would help clarify things a bit before making a snap judgement such as "she's notta very bright 15 year old...". if the investigation leads to the fact that she had every opportunity to make a safe getaway but didn't, then i'll agree with you that she's not a very bright 15 year old. until then, let's keep the presumptions down to to a minimum.

This is a bit off subject and perhaps a bit prickish but, can someone please tell me how such random missing person cases become headline news? people disappear more than most would think, how is it only a couple are put on television? Is one life more important than another?

if the press covered each and every missing persons case, there'd be no room left for the inevitable iraqi war coverage. in other words, why doesn't the press headline every fatal car crash, every homicide, every rape or every robbery in the united states? it can't be done. it's impossible. you may as well have no less than one tv station, newspaper devoted to each crime. not gonna happen.

Then(pardon my jerkish sound) why did her disappearance matter to the US in the first place? she is but another person, gone with many others(although she has now been found). Media makes no sense to me.

Toksin you probably hit the nail right on the head so to speak. Even at her age she's easily intimidated. I just pray that she's healthy and can get this all behind her with whatever help is needed.

She's a child. She is only 15, She may not have the maturity to think about those things while under the duress she suffered. Either way is a mute point now but by the grace of god she's home.
I can only imagine how her parents felt. Considering my daughter is the same age. I'd have killed this guy today even while he was in custody

I understand this, but what I dont understand is why it must take up time of mine and everyone elses because she went missing. I know I sound like a blowhard but hear me out. Her Kidnapping should be a concern of only her family, friends, community, and those who are searching for her. People post pictures of missing children and family members everyday. There is a store I often visit that has a wall filled with pictures of missing children, and they arent on the news. does this make them unimportant? no. I just assume keep her off of the national news just like the other countless children who have disappeared in this country. One life is not important over another, if you search for one, search for them all or none at all. I may sound like a moron to some, but this is what I think.

It was the manner in which she was abducted. It was also at a time that other children were missing/abducted. I have children. I'd cause so much of a rucus that it couldn't help but be carried by the news

Still, do you understand the just of my response? The same would go for the other abductions, and the same is true in the case of Laci Peterson. Im sorry if I sound any bit ignorant.

I don't consider it ignorance, I also don't completely disagree with you. I think that your looking at it a different direction that most would myself included. All children that are abducted/missing/killed for whatever reason is a loss to all of humanity. I appreciate the fact that my children may grow up to be future leaders. The children will one day be the ones that will be taking care of us. God forgive us if we ever forget that or take it for granted. I'm certainly not a bible thumper, matter of fact I rarely attend church but I do know that there must be a higher power guiding us and our children. He cannot stop the evil that we mortal humans do to each other but he is always there for us to rely on. Regardless of faith most agree there is a higher power. What we teach our children is very important. Children one day will be the salvation of us all or our demise.

It's a situation thing. It all depends on the circumstances. While it is utterly ridiculous that they only show something like one out of 1000, it's still a matter of time, connections, money, fame, etc... The family was rich, if I remember right, and probably had the connections and the desperation to find the girl.
Weren't they covering this something like the day after it happened? the police sometimes use the media to get the message out as well. If they think there might be a chance that the girl could still be found, they'd stick her face on everything they could get. As sad as it is, it usually revolves around money. Like everything else.

Nobody is suggesting that she was any more important than anyone else. The ony time the this news took up your time was the amount you let it take up. I dont think your were forced to pay attention or spend time in front of the TV to watch it.
If all news stories were stopped because its something that happens to to many people to report on, then news would limited indeed.
Sometimes, these stories take on a life of their own. Enough people are interested in it so news organizations know people want to hear about it.
