6V 54 Chevy Starter

I have a 6V starter for a 235 cu in engine for a 54 sedan delivery. Where would the best place to find a new starter be? Would I want to look for 2 or 4 coil windings?

Thanks,
Robert

Robert,

I don't have a specific answer to your question, but I know a place where you can send your starter and they will do a first-class job of rebuilding it.

It's called Automotive Manufacturers. Richmond, VA. (804) 321-6861

Again, I don't know where you are but if you're anywhere near this area, they are HIGHLY recommended. Reasonable prices, too.

For the record, I have nothing to gain or lose by posting this. I've had good service from them, and that's why I recommend them. They do antique generators, water pumps (we send a ton of tractor stuff there) and starters.

I guess I didn't ask the right thing. Which 12V starters would fit a 54 Chevy sedan delivery so I can switch to a 12V starter? I'm looking for one that would fit and can either be new or rebuilt, but don't know which would match. For instance, if a Nova starter would fit and work, I could get one of those.

Check in Hemmings News, your starter could be converted to 12v or there are shops that can supply the whole deal.

I know '55s were 12V. The starter SHOULD fit.

FWIW, I knew a man years ago with an old "flat hood" Jeep. It had a 6V system, converted to 12V. He changed the generator and regulator, but left the 6V starter in place. The engine cranked twice as fast (literally) and as a result, never left him stranded in the coldest weather. The wiring in a 6V system is much heavier than a 12V system, as the amperage requiements are double. You could probably use the 6V starter with success.

If you have the 235 6-banger, anything from '55-62 should fit with no problem. It really doesn't pay to play with a 6 volt component unless you want to keep it stock.

You'd have to match up what you have, there are differences in the drive housing between stick, automatics and some truck applications.

You should have a local automotive electric company in your area who should be more than willing to suggest options.
