I have a 1996 Taurus 24V DOHC sedan and you have to smack the bottom of the gas tank to get the car to run for a few days. So I decided to visit the parts yard and found 20+ taurus's with the same body style, only 1 had the optional engine I have, a 99. the rest were the OHV engine. I pulled the fuel pump from the 99 and I am going to install it tomorrow. I just noticed that researching online shows the pump assemblies to be different parts numbers and longer wires so I am going to take the pumps themselves apart and see if I can swap only the pump part and leave the senders the same. Will update later in the week of success or failure.

OK jacked the rear of the car up and sat the rear part of the axle on jackstands. Used 1/2'' socket and dropped the tank down at an angle. Used hammer and socket screw driver to pop open the locking retainer ring. Pulled out the pump and changed out fuel filter while i was down there. I sat the 96 bad pump next to unknown status 99 pump. SAME dang pump design with SAME sender style and wire colors. ONLY DIFFERENCE was a reversed main wire harness connector. Cut off the ends 2'' from the end and got heat shrink butt connectors and spliced my old one onto the new one. Hooked everything back up, primed the pump 10 times by key (on off) and then went to start it, started right up w00t!!!!!
