Interchangeable fuel pumps? + Bonus mini rant

I have a bad fuel pump in my 1998 Taurus DOHC. I happen to have a spare that I took from a 96 Taurus with a Vulan engine so I figured on an easy fix. Well, the fuel pump on the 96 has a female electrical connection while the fuel pump on the 98 has a male electrical connection.
I checked on Parts America to compare parts numbers and Motorcraft had a different fuel pump part number for each year from 1996 to 2000. However, Bosch was the same for each year and fit all models (Vulcan, Duratec and SHO) so from the Bosch all being the same pump for each year I figured I can put the fuel pump from the 1996 Vulcan into the 1998 Duratec if I just splice the male electrical connector onto the pump.

Does anyone know of a reason this may not work?

I don't want to go off on a rant here but...Why would Ford change the fuel pump design every year??? Seems absurd! I drive all Fords and love the Taurus but it's hard to remain loyal when I regularly run into this kind of nonsense.
Out of curiosity I checked on the same year fuel pump for a Toyota Camry with a 3.0 V6 and you guessed it...it fit Camry's from 1992 to 2001 and half of the other Toyota models. Why is Ford losing billions?!??!?

Maybe (hopefully) Ford found a reliability opportunity that they could implement each model year, hence the new part number. Now changing the electrical connector, that doesn't make a lot of sense as now they need to change the wiring harness.

If you can swing the cash currently, why not get a new fuel pump and install it? I'm not sure I'd suggest installing a used fuel pump, especially one from an older vehicle.

I could put a new fuel pump in but the $400 price for a Motorcraft has me checking my options. Also I'm a bit of a tinkerer and like to make things work and since I have a good used fuel pump I just thought I'd give it a try.
There's a brand called "Python" that is only $88 and has a 1 year warranty but I don't have any experience with the brand.

I'm not familiar with Python either, but for the price I suspect, like the Bosch unit, it's a universal pump that would get mounted in the original mount. Basically it's the motor and pump head. You pull out the bad motor and pump head, transfer the rubber isolators from the old to the Bosch unit, bend a couple of brackets, attach the wires, and reinstall.

Autozone has a full assembly (pump, motor, sending unit, and mount) for $188. Still pricier than I expected, but half what the dealer wants.
