Just to give you guys an idea of the arduous labor i went through today fixing the massive hole in my trunk. I swear, the rust could not have been in a worse spot. The rust went straight up to the window so i couldn't weld there and just had to fill around with body filler. I'll have to post a pic of the finished project tomorrow when i get the chance. I can't even tell you guys how happy i am to be able to put my new speakers in the trunk cause the old ones rusted solid!

WOW thats much worse than mine was, thats a typical place for rust to form though. my rust holes were only about big enough to fit your thumb through, i had to kinda rebuild and put new metal where the weatherstripping slips onto though.

Yeah later in the process i found that the whole lip on that corner where the weather stripping goes was disintegrated so i had to fix that too. Its funny cause theres not one bit of rust on the other side of the car. :screwy:

Now that is rust.
You will probably need to remove rear window to fix completely.

I have some rust issues to deal with also before it gets that bad.

I hate rust, all my cars seem to have some here and there

Good Luck with the project.

That's what's nice about AZ. 20 some odd years and not once speck of 'cancer' on the car. The portion you show above looks brand new on my car.

i am really optimistic. even though i live here in rustachusetts my car is really clean in this area. the guy kept it in his garage while his new cars lived in the driveway HAHA so im hoping when i take a look under the panel of doom i find very little rust

Thats the only bad design about these GM body styles is how foilage can buildup under that panel, its like that on the older monte carlos, cutlass, and regals too

yeah i was very surprised at what i saw when i took the metal panel off. The only reason it rusted so bad there was because pine needles built up under it and began to decompose.

I wish i lived somewhere like that. It makes me mad because its a ton of work to keep up with all the rust. Its always a nice little surprise! Like the other day i looked at the bottom of my doors and just about every door is rusted out at the bottom. At least i know the water will drain out though!

Thats what I said when we moved to california, no more rusted cars.
But since we are close to the beach here, my cars rust just as bad as they did when we lived in new jersey. I guess i will have to move a few more mile inland then i won't have that problem anymore..

Wow your lucky! But the underside of my doors are an absolute MESS too. I just cleaned em up and sprayed them with primer to at least slow down the rust process. After all of that work i did on the trunk area it STILL leaks too! I found out the under the rubber seal, the whole lip is rusted. Thats gunna take a while to fix...

WOW, I feel so lucky that when I pulled that panel off mine, it was completly rust free. I was actually shocked considering most of the door bottoms on my Caprice are shot and it's seen a few salt-belt winters.

yeah... i have a fist sized hole under my passenger door. which annoys me because the car had no rot when i got it. i need a garage to store it in over the winter and not outside. this year im putting a tarp over it

Tarp's a dangerous thing. It'll rub the hell out of your paint giving you more grief. Also, it'll hold in moisture. A car tent isn't a bad idea though, I'm considering getting one of those.

What about those fitted cloth like covers that they make?
