Hello all Chevy Drivers :) I currently drive a 10 Year old Toyota Camry And am Looking for a new vehicle. I have decided to get a suv. Not sure why because of gas prices and all but I love to sit up high :)
So I have come down to a Toyota Fj Cruiser, 4runner or a chevy silverado 1500.
And I Would like to know the honest truth on Gas Mileage on the 1500 5.3.
I will be driving in the city and on Highway so please, turn me into a die hard Chevy guy :)

2000 5.3 vortec, automatic, easy driving style. 17 mixed, 22 freeway.
i have driven a brand new 4runner for a month about 4 mths ago as a rental. it does about 24 mpg mixed.
also, you don't have to listen to me, but avoid domestics.

Well when my truck was stock, I never got any better than 15 in town and about 18-19 highway. My girlfriend has a 97 4Runner, I like it but also love the bigger cab size of the Silverado.

Hi Evan, Good luck with the new vehicle...I'll tell you what I have been researching though that may cause you less pain at the gas pumps, when buying a bigger size car, truck, or suv. It's a product that converts your vehicle to burn partial water. And from what I've been reading its Rocking too!! ...Does not de-qualify the warranty of your vehicle! Ads a ton more miles to the gallon, burns cleaner, better for your engine, and is really easy to install and uninstall...And extremely cheap as well considering the benefits...Anyway check it out if you want...It's always free to look...

My silverado 1500 (2004, 2x4 ls) gets about 17.5mpg total per tank. I drive about 120 miles freeway a day, but occasionally about 30 miles city, so it's a mix. I would say I would probably get around 16.2 city, and 18.1 freeway. Hope that helps.

I have am original owner of a 2000 sil 5.3 4x4 .. new I got 14mpg....ave. driving city /hwy...
then at 10,000mi I converted all transmission and engine oil to synthetic... last mileage check on hwy 250miles was 20 + mpg...ave city/hwy it's 17mpg...so I gained some with the synthetic...I now have 120,ooomi on it...
If you don't have problems with your vehicle its good ...but if things go wrong you can't rely on the dealership/GM to make things right...
I stay away from the dealerships they are thieves....

apperently i have the best 5.3L mileage here, so i wanted to make some clarification:
1. i do have 17+/22, just checked again
2. i drive humanely
3. i have HALO plugs and K&N air filter.
and i don't do cheap gas stations like arco. chevron, shell, very rarely 76. chevron been the best mileage wise so far.
always have to forget something... also, i run amsoil in that truck. all of my non oil taking vehicles run either on amsoil or royal purple. so, come to think about it, my mpg is relevant to plugs/oil/driving habits. i do not contribute much to air filter, though on my CR-V, back in time, i think i had about a mile+ on it. but i do not have it strictly measured or documented, so it's a "butt dyno" observation.
i know 100% that adding typhoon air intake to that honda DROPPED mpg by solid 10% though.

I only use shell gas 95% of the time as it is close to my home...I have used this fuel with no problems....and after cutting the fuel filters open to check condition the media looks not too dark after 30,ooomi...throttle body also stays pretty clean.......I have also used chevron and found no MPG diff....on vacation trips....getting 20mpg hywy...87octane........

Average around 18-19 (imperial). You're going to cry going from a Camry to a Silverado.

imperial gallon? 120% us gallon? then your mileage is, actually, 18.5 less 20% = 14.8, if i am right on my math.
