Engine Rev

Today I was sitting in my 98 Lumina 180,000 miles, and I started to rev my car alittle, and noticed something. When I rev my engine shouldn't it just keep reving up or should it kind of sound like VROOM VROOM VROOM. It's not a constant rev. It revs then sounds like its going to die then revs again.

Any help would be appricated.

A little revving? As in 6k-ish+ RPM?

Your car has an electronic rev limiter. When the engine hits redline, the system kills the spark to eliminate a thown rod, et al.

By the sound of the OP, it's lucky this engine has the limiter!!

They actually cut back around 4000 rpm if not in gear...

I'm still trying to figure out why all these people feel the need to rev an unloaded engine that high...they keep showing up here asking about that.

It's not an F1 motor, ok?...it's an American V6...be nice to it...
