Spectra Engine Problems after Wash

We just bought a 2003 Kia Spectra. My husband used a degreaser on the engine and power washed it. This morning it was sputtering and trying to die at stops, the check engine light was flashing, the catalytic converter was glowing red hot after driving it a short distance to church and back. It acted like it wasn't getting any fuel because it wouldn't accelerate.
Everything seemed fine until he washed and degreased it. What do you think could be wrong? He has degreased engines before and never had a problem.

I am answering my own post incase anyone is interested. We ended up taking the car into the shop. Water has gotten into the spark plugs because of a crack in some case and it was misfiring. In addition to the catalytic converter being clogged up. Well we got the case replaced and the spark pluggs dried out and the exhaust system cleaned up. The car runs pretty good now.
If this had not happened, come the first big rain, we would have been walking anyway. So, I guess this was a mixed blessing.:p

don't spray water on the engine. Too many electric connections and sensors. In the future try a rag and some brake cleaner.
