Nu Owner, info please

Hello all, just bought a L reg 2.0l petrol. The bloke told me he had to fit a new water pump. I drove to work earlier and it over heated, water spraying out of the radiator cap. Is this a sign of a new water pump or is it worse? Part from that, its ok!!!!
