95 fan problem fixed

Had a thread up and someone was helping me out. Then I got a problem starting the car cause the anti theft. Turns out the person before did the Resistor thing and cut the ignition lock wire under the dash. Bought new lock and re wired it up and now my fan works again. But think the thing is still running hot. The fan comes on when the temp gauge reacheds mid point but my temp still rises to 3/4 on the gauge so dont think that is normal. But that fixed my fan problem.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. Do you have any idea what the temp is? or is the gauge just lines basically? Now that you have the fan going you could flush the system and install a new lower temp thermometer. How is the radiator cap?

Yea there is no numbers on the guage just lines. The halfway mark i think is 205 cause i guess that is when the fans kick on is at 205 range so yea thats the half way mark on my gauge. Now thermometer like thermostate? Cause I put a new one in thinking that might have been my heating problem. As for radiator cap i think its sealing just fine but when its on there all the way there is a little play in it so im not so sure about if its making a good seal.

I think is should be tight. Yes I meant thermostat. Did you put in orig temp or lowered?
Does it use dexcool or green? Make sure you replace it with what it had, the two do not mix. Check hoses. Do you go through coolant without any leaks, like a intake manifold or head gasket leak?

Yea i thought the cap should be tight to. But no i put in a oem thermstate. Also with the coolant i put green in there. That is what it had before. Since I just bought the car I dont know how long it was since they last filled it. So it took a pretty decent amount. As far as i can tell there is no leaking at the head or intake. I will check that out tomorrow more closely. Its dark now and had work all day.

Heres a few heat related questions off the top of my head...

Does the car heat up when driving as much as when sitting? Any white smoke coming out of the tail pipes? Did you blead the coolant system when you changed the thermo? Any white stuff in the oil or on the top of your oil fill cap? Did you put premixed antifreeze in or did you add the water yourself?

Yea the car gets hotter when i sit. When i keep moving it stays cool thats why im worried. Moving it sits at half way mark on guage when stoping at lights goes to 3 quarters. 160 being lowest on guages 260 being highest on guages. halfway mark is when my fan kicks on. No i didnt bleed anything when i changed thermo. I used already mixed stuff the green stuff. and no to the white smoke or white stuff on oil cap.

Mikeemon. Yea checked around head and intake its dry as the dessert. Not even any oil like you would normally see i was impressed to be honest. Since i added coolant about 2 weeks ago there is none missing. But i am a little low on Transmission fluid so need to take care of that. Do you happen to know what normal operating tempature is?

A stock tstat should be around 190-195*.
How does the trans fluid look?

95 camaro’s should have dex cool. Which is orange NOT green.
You should have a 50/50 mix of orange and water.
Stop at auto zone and get a new radiator cap. They have one with a temp gauge on it. You have to raise the hood to see how hot it is but this will tell you what the temp is in the radiator.

Ok ill put the dex cool in it. I know its suppose to use the Dex shit. But it already had green in it and that problem was not there. Atleast I didnt notice till the car finally over heated. But yea I checked the Tranny fluid and its a little low so going to add some. It looks fine though just a little low like not even a quarter of a quart will be needed. Going to change the oil to. And thanks for the suggestion on the radiator cap ill have to check that out.

If the thing came with dexcool and someone replaced it with green, that could be your problem. Drain the green. get some cooling system cleaner,
like something stronger than regular flush stuff. Use as directed. Drain system. You may want to try to access block drain plugs. Refill with dexcool.
From what i have been told, when the two are mixed it can really cause problems.

Here is another thread on the topic of dexcool conversion. The last post has a link to a blog about why you should not try to convert.

Yea i know not to mix them they get thick or something like that. Either way I know its bad to mix. But just know that it was green when i went to put more in so went with the green. But plan to do a flush this weekend been real busy and im also going to get that cap i think. I have drove the piss out of it a couple times and it wont go over the 3/4 mark on the gauge so its not getting to hot anymore that fan really helped out. But yea ill get that dex stuff in this weekend and some cleaner you talked about.

Dex cool is suppose to have special additives to it to help lubricate today’s water pumps and help fight corrosion.

I got my radiator cap from summit racing, but I have seen them at auto zone. Summit Part # is. sum-380062 think it was bout $15 to $20 it is a 16lb cap. I have a LT1 not sure if the 6 cylinders use the same cap or not.

The new antifreezes are compatable with any other type; It will say right on the bottle.

You're right about that, but someone put the green stuff not the new compatable stuff in his car and it should have dex cool.
