Probably a dumb question/idea...

..but since this thread is so dead, why not. So i've read a few posts lately in threads about the dislike of those Autosticks in automatic transmissions. This is because they'll shift automatically even if left in 'manual mode'. Anyway I was thinking why isn't there a manual transmission with an automatic mode(ex. for like traffic jams)? Would that require two transmissions? Or weigh too much?
BTW: To my knowledge this doesn't exist, but if it does, whoops and sorry.

Hmm... Very true. There isn't anything I enjoy more than sitting still and being surrounded by my favorite thing: automobiles.

SMGII, SMGIII, DSG, PDK, DCT. Thats all you need to know.

So, essentially, those are all pretty much alike. A whoops and sorry is almost due. I was actually thinking about something where one still has to shift through the 1-5(or 6) pattern, like on a standard transmission. Then have a way of activating an automatic mode. To me it seems like all the transmissions you listed are still like Tiptronic, one just pushes 'up' or 'down' or paddles to shift. I, personally, still want to be able to rely on my own skill, taking the chance of misshifting.

The ones you listed are cool though, thanks.

Understandable, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to screw up on some of those. Removing the chance of misshifting and possibly breaking something isn't really not falling on to your own skill. That would be the same thing as saying I prefer shooting bolt action rifles not because its more accurate, but because I'd rather rely on my own skill on not inducing a misfire. The SMGII/III, DSG, DCT, PDK, and others are still clutch transmissions. They have a clutch (in some cases two clutches). The only difference is between that and an old school stick is the removal of the clutch pedal.

Based on what you are asking...yeah, I think it is possible to fabricate a "clutchless" (i.e. no pedal) manual that also has a shift pattern instead of an up/down. I don't see why you would want to though, because you've just removed every single bennefit of a SMG or Direct Shift box.

Also, tiptronnic=/=DSG, DCT, SMG, and what have you. A tiptronic is a computer control system in an automatic gearbox that allows the driver to over ride the torque converter and select another gear. A Sequential or Direct shifting box is not the same as a tiptronic.

Ohh, about the tiptronic. I wasn't really sure which was which as far as manual mode in autos or SMG. Thanks.
I did look up each transmission though that you listed, they are neat.

If you are going to do that you might has well just put a clutch pedal on the thing and move your left foot. :) lazy pile.

Its called a manual valve body. You have to shit but don't have a clutch. Or like stated above smg and such.
Wow that really was a stupid question.

No sir, you are the stupid one. For not understanding what I was thinking about and not asking.
I'm talking about having a regular transmission, clutch pedal and 1-5 gear selection. Then having a way of putting it in automatic mode. This does not exist. Probably never will, it was just an idea for those who like to use a clutch, but not all the time. ex. traffic jams

Some Rally cars use a semi-auto manual transmission. They have a clutch, used only for stopping and starting the car, then they use a sequential transmission for running through the gears.

Here's the odds on what you drive:

Honda Civic or like automobile: 3:1
Chevrolet or Dodge muscle car: 10:1
Econo-car: 25:1
Fast German car: 60:1
14 year old who doesn't even have a driver's license yet: 2:5

Prace bets now!

If your refering to what I drive it is non of the above that you have stated.
Its actually a 95 mustang with a big inch windsor non stock block stroker with twin t4 turbochargers, the biggest intercooler you've ever seen, solid roller cam and it drags the rear bumper when I launch.
Other than that I daily drive a truck currently but have had various mustangs, a 11 second 91 galant vr4, a evo 8 was my previous daily driver. And my first car I ever drove daily to high school was a corvette.

ah so a spoiled bastard eh? its not a cavalier, its a fucking supercharged cobalt. get it right.

Nobody cares that you drove a corvette to school. that doesnt make you better than anybody else.

Nor does the size of your intercooler.

I drive a ~300hp car. not a 140hp turd. I am proud of what I drive, and you are more than welcome to be proud of what you drive. Just dont get cocky about it because daddy bought you a vette or you have no life and work 60 hours a week. I am proud of this car, as I am 17 and bought it with my own money.

I worked hard to pay for all my cars, I didn't waste all my time on shitty forums like this, I was busy building my car completely by myself with some help of a few buddies along the way.

Believe me you've never seen a bigger core, and its not a shitty ebay unit either, its 3 spearco cores welded together.
And very effiencent.

So enjoy your cavalier with a blower, it is infact a great car for a little 17 year old domestic ricer.
If I ever bought one of those cars I would get the turbo one so I could whoop your ass in that too. Must make you salty everytime you get your ass handed to you by the srt4 guys huh? Oh but you prolly don't even race, you just like to talk shit over the internet right?

What am I doing here?
I am here to talk about racing but instead I have to deal with some 17 year old kid run his mouth like he knows how to work on a car because he drives a cavalier with a blower and he read online how to put a pulley on the blower.
But after spending no more than 20 minutes on this forum I have realized this is truely the shittiest forum filled with idiots with no knowledge about working on cars. This is why all of you get along so well.

I've helped freinds work on Turbo Diesel pickups. No, it is not the biggest intercooler I have ever seen.

You continue to fail at everything you do. Everytime you open your mouth, the entire world gets a little dumber for having to share the same air you breath. Your very existence prooves the falsehood of survival of the fittest, and the fact that you are still alive only makes me wish more your mother had been pro choice, and exercised that right. Everything you type is full of things I hate, and seriously, if you had been a victim of the Nazi advance, I'm not sure if I would have been upset. Hell, you make eujenics seems like a good idea. (Sorry to any Jewish members. Then again, after driving by the local synagouge and seeing the plethora of BMWs, Benzs, and Audis...I think you all have gotten over it?)

Mr. BCR is Back, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Wow you sure showed me with that movie quote....way to be original.

My intercooler is bigger and the ford superduty's fyi. Also its way more efficient.
So I believe you fail in your words and actions, chicken fucker! (since we are quoting movies here.)

Except mine is light hearted and funny, and sort of a bit of a calling card around here. Yours is just sad and pathetic from a half rate cheap shit comedy that wasn't all that good. Oh, and I don't think its that effecient if your intercooler is bigger than a Ford Superduty off the newest trucks, which is about the size physically of a small four cylinder motor.

Mods, can't you do an IP ban on this failed abortion?

Ban Me
08-19-2008, 04:37 PM
No they can't retard that is why I am smarter.
And yes my intercooler is that size and efficient because I run twin gt40 ball bearing turbos that move quite a bit of air. Car makes over 1000whp on pump gas (E85) that is.

So stop bitching about me being here and start discussing some racing you fucking cry baby!
