98 GA GT Growl ....

I've been lurking here for a few weeks. Love the site. I recently had someone give me a 98 grand am gt coupe w/ a 2.4 . The car had water in the oil, and the owner gave up on it. I took the car, researched this site and replaced the waterpump and changed the oil and got a great car in great condition for a $50 waterpump :) . Then the abs light was coming on and the traction light was acting up. Again I researched this site and read about the hub problems. I've had a growl from the drivers front area in gear under acceleration only . The noise goes away after 30-35 mph. I was hoping the hub was the culprit of all my syptoms. I just replaced the hub and brake pads, alas my growl still exists. It never does it in nuetral or park. only under load while accelerating from a stop. It is definatly drivetrain, I'm thinking it is the drivers side cv. I needed a hub for sure, my abs light and traction control system works perfect now. I believe the car was hit in the front. Due to the new paint and new headlights(the car really looks awesome, you would never believe that someone just gave it away if you saw it. Ok rant over, I'm thinking new front drivers axle, what do you say?

Check a few other things before throwing parts into it. Look at the carrier bearing on the passenger side cv shaft. Also, check the fluid in the transmission. The trans in my 95 gt growled before it decided to end its life a few years ago.

Trans is full, and fluid is a nice pink/red color. The noise is a growl/scraping sound sounds like a dry bearing scrape. The noise is definately on the drivers side of the car though. I'll get under there this weekend and see if I can see anything. Thanks for the advice, I'll report back when I fix it.

My 2000 Grand Am SE did the same thing. My front left hub was completely destructed. When I took it off, it just fell into pieces lol . So I replaced it with a new one from Advance Auto Parts. Believe it or not, soon after it started making the same noise again and the new hub jacked up too. So if you bought the new one from Advance Auto Parts you may want to check to be sure that's not the problem again. I have since not had a problem with it.
