Do I Need to replace my automatic transmission?

I bought a used 1988 626 two months ago.

Yesterday, leaving from home, I put it into reverse and it emitted a "thump" (before it's always been smooth).

Then coming back from work, I did it again, and when I put it into Drive it whined but got me up a hill back to my apartment.

Today, it would not engage reverse at all, so I brought it in to my mechanic.

He said that the transmission fluid was high, but it was emitting smoke...He said they don't repair transmissions, only replace, and he recommeded that. He said labor would be $400, and the parts maybe $1600.

Question: is that a fair price? And do you think I need to replace the whole transmission?

I would say as a former owner of a shop that is a fair price for labor. But the amount they are charging for a transmission is outrageous. I would go for a used tranny from somewhere (check car-parts.com) and you can find one close to your home. You will save a lot!!!! If you tell me what city and state you live in I may be able to help you find a good price for one.
