1 month ago had P1406 so I replaced the EGR just to get it over with rather than spending hours on end cleaning and applying band-aids to it. once I replaced this the light was off for week. Only this time the crazy light is saying P0401. So I cleaned all in the throttle body and made sure there was a clear path from EGR housing to interior of throttle body. I even gave the inside a good scrubing with sea foam. Of course light went off but now the crazy thing is saying P1406. I really don't wanna tke it to the dea..... I can't even bring myself to say it but this light has to go. ANY IDEAS?

Sounds like a similar issue I've had with my '96 except O2 and EGR. There are some other components that are part of the EGR system. Check your electrical connections. You will have to run a certain number of consistent drive cycles also (not to clear the code)
Conditions for Setting the DTC

Easy buddy. No one called your truck a jalopy. We are trying to help you. I did have an EGR code come up on my '96 (I think it was not functioning code) due to a post-cat O2 being removed. Also on that bank or side, my catalytic converter was below efficiency standards. Check those, just a thought.

I'm just playin. That was a joke since I have no clue what you were talking about in the post. PLus I wouldnt seriously call it a jalopy since everyone reading this probably has one. I'll try that though

You trying to call my Rodeo a P of S? HUH?HUH?
OK I was kidding too. I've owned my piece for about two months now and I have only had issues with the EGR, O2, and cattys (just emissions) It has 160k on it and runs like a beast. I am curious what brand EGR did you put on yours? This vehicle seems to very particular with parts. I used a Delphi EGR.

not sure it was at autozone. thought that maybe this was the problem......I regret this because in pulling out an old receipt, I found my dad (used to be his car) purchased an egr and installation from the dealer 4 years ago. THE PART WAS ALMOST THE SAME AS WHAT I PAID FOR THE KNOCK-OFF BRAND! (I paid $139 for the part and gasket. dealer was $150 for the part and the gasket was an additional $8) BTW installation was $150....and to simply clean the egr port at the dealer, it's $164 plus tax.

Did you ever clear the code by either disconnecting the battery for 30 mins. or pulling the PCM or ECM fuse located in the fuse box on R side(passenger) under hood?

If so, you should probably try and buy another one to verify the integrity of the part you have installed. I found mine on ebay for $60.

Take it back and try a new one. For emissions codes to clear sometimes, you will need to run what is called a drive cycle. This runs a diagnostic of several systems in order verify they are ready. This is necessary to prepare for an emissions test. Google drive cycles and you should get a generic or some other usable directions for the test. I am still dealing with that right now. I did the EGR, O2, and now 1 cat. The emissions test is showing not ready for some of these systems. Its a bitch and I am over it. Registration is expired and the DMV won't extend it. In a nut shell, you may clear the code but it may return due to the formentioned. If nothing else works, take to a pro.
