ECU fried. Why

92 TT dodge stealth wouldnt start so I had it taken to Good Year. At first they thought it was the relay so i spend $200 there. After that they realized it was a fried ECU, so I bought another on $350, and had it put in. They started it and began to code it. The second time they started it the new ECU fried. I'm tired of wasting money on incompetent mechanics, so i came to the professionals:) What is causing it?

Its hard to say. There could be a sensor on the engine shorting and sending a signal to the ECU causing it to overload and burn.

i was told when my ecu went, go to a dealer, other ecu's tend to only work like 8 outta 10 times. mine plugged in and the mechanic gave it 5mins, then started the car and i drove it till the clutch went a few months later. no issues, tho along the process we found many other issues.

only downside, dealers charge like 1200 for the ecu, lukily mine was free from a person i knew. but if 1200 is bad now think if u go thru 4 ecu's at the cost of 350 each...that 1400, so ehh, in the end its up to u.

was it the right ecu? for a 92 tt, not one for a 94 or newer or maybe lower end 3/s?

yeah it was the right number they told us we needed. it came from a first gen TT 3kgt/stealth. they said it could be the alternater kicking back or somethin that caused it to get fried.?

i dont know if it applies to 3/s's but in some older cars with ecu's, jump starting another car can cause and ecu to fry
