2001 Grand Am GT 3.4L
My temperature guage intermittently works. Some days it reads correctly, other days it reads 100
The mechanic has put diagnostic meter on it and the car computer says that the temp is about 160, but guage still reads 100.
The temperature guage has been replaced, and the cabling has been checked, but nothing found.
When starting the car the guage goes up and back as it should.
The mechanic thought perhaps something wrong with car computer. Anyone have any other ideas?

Welcome to AF !

Has the wires at the sensor been checked ?
Because 160 deg is still way low for a 3.4.
Most run around 200 unless you have a 180 deg thermostat.

The cabling appears to be good. We've checked it out.
I took it to the dealership and they said the thermostat valve was bad. That doesn't add up to me, but I suppose it could be. I changed it out tonight so we'll see what happens. (the guage was working before I took it out)
BTW It was a real pain in the rear to change it. I would like to smack the heck out of whomever designs cars these days.

I agree that 160 is too low, but I've attributed that to the fan running on high all of the time because the car computer is in failure mode.

Well, the Thermostat was the problem. Go figure. It is a major pain in the butt to change on your own. But at least it is finally fixed.

Glad you figured it out! :D
Yeah if the thermo sticks open, probly to much, which made it run low on the thermo gauge. They dont last forever either and it is realy a cheap & easy fix IMO.

And for once, the stealership was correct. lol
