Fuel pump replacement issues

I replaced the fuel pump on our 2001 GP on Sunday (4 days ago) and now it doesn't want to start up on the first attempted crank. After the second attempt it starts right up. I am beginning to think that there maybe something else wrong. I also put a brand new fuel filter on there as well. After it cranks it runs perfectly. I am really not sure how to approach the problem. I guess I could check the fuel pressure, but I am assuming that should be okay since it runs fine after it starts. I am scratching my head on this one guys. I have been thinking: could that fuel pump be bad though it is brand new.

Sounds like you are on the right track. It would seem that the fuel pressure is bleeding down and it takes 2 tries to bring it back up. A pressure gage will answer a lot of questions.

Did you use a Delco pump and did you replace the strainer "sock"? (the truck pumps have this as a separate part number...not sure how yours was built).

i have that problem with my 1994 3100. sometimes if the fuel level is real low it lets the gas drain out of the lines into the tank and it doesn't start first crack. i got gas in it and as long as it isn't in the yellow hatched marks it starts fine. maybe this is your problem?

The AC Delco fuel pump assembly for '97-'03 Grand Prixs will have the sock to include the level sending unit. Thats why the cost is so high.

I just had this issue today, a customer installed his own aftermarket pump and was complaining of similar issues as you are. Fuel pressue check revealed pressure dropping quickly after shuting the vehicle off. Bad check valve in the new pump, unfortunately it happens. The Delco units are not that expensive compared to the aftermarket units and definately have less issues in my experiance.
