My Tranny

Hey guys, i have yet another question (hehe) maybe someone can help me answer. I've had my lude for about 2 weeks now, and so far its been 97% great, its a 1992 prelude. One thing that I have noticed, and have been increasingly worried about is this: When im doing regular city driving, my car (which is automatic) kind of jumps or kicks foreward when it shifts from first to second, and second to third. Third to fourth, and fourth gear to fifth seems to be fine, its just 1-2 and 2-3. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or if its even normal in prelude. Thx for the help again.:grey:

that's an issue with other hondas as well. my mom's 2002 accord does the same. and sometimes it's as if the tranny doesn't know which gear it wants to go to. honda automatics aren't particularly known for smooth shifting. is it excessive? does it ever skip a gear?

Yea I have a auto lude also, i got a levelten rebuild kit and it does not do it at all any more.

I was not aware that Honda built a 5 speed automatic tranny in 92. Anyway, make sure that the tranny is properly serviced using approved fluid. ANother thing-if it applies to yours the gearbox MUST be reversed flushed (this is fact in 5th gen) because certain ones do not have a replaceable screen and filter. A drain and add is not going to clear all of the junk out that has accumulated over the years. Honda dealers generally charge $50 to do the drain and add (3 quarts) and $100 for the reverse flush and fill (7 quarts).
Can't hurt and might make it better.

Well, thanks for all the helpfull replies, my cousin advised that i get some STP fuel injector cleaner, because the injectors could have been clogged up causing a slight delay when changing gears. It has actually helped a bit too. I think that I may take it into the dealer, but im not going to spend alot of money on it, my moms accord is stick, so I will probably try to master stick (damn hills in vancouver) and maybe upgrade to standard in the summer when i get a job. I really enjoy driving standard, its so much more fun. Also, anyone have any quotes off the top of their heads of how much a swap from an auto transmission to a manual would cost? Thx for the help.... and yes my car is 5 spd auto, i double checked in the car manual.

If your problems occurs when you are slowing down to stop or go around a corner and then accelerate you may be "catching" the trans between gears. If this is the case there is nothing you can do other than change your driving style. There are NO adjustments in a Honda auto. trans. Try either braking a little sooner or a little later. I work at a Honda Dealer service dept. DO NOT power flush, reverse flush, whatever you might call it a Honda auto. trans. Honda has issued several documents stating that procedure is likely to cause problems.
