yea that's rediculous bro. There's got to be some underlying cause. 1 sucks, 2 is really bad luck, but 3...gotta be a reason.

There is zero explanation for this one blowing. The first two happened at the dragstrip.
The first exploded after a ton of wheel spin
The second exploded on its very first launch
This one I have no clue when or why. I started smelling oil on the way home. Got home and saw a trail of oil following me in. Thought it was rear main because car drove fine otherwise.
Went to drain the trans so I could pull it and all I got was a few drops. I knew I was in trouble then.
LSD is going in this time.

lol, i love when we make excuses why we have to buy mods.
i told my wife i HAD to get a CF driveshaft becasue mine was broke
I HAD to get new wheels because the beads were leaking due to peeling chrome
i HAD to get prosport gauges because my OP was broken...
hopefully you can find one on a GB or something. Which one are you going with?

First off, you're married? I had no clue
Second Quaiffe is going in. I have one sitting about 5 feet from me right now. :)
I bought it after the second blown diff. Just never got it installed. I went tonight and bought the rest of the stuff I should need to tear down my other transmissions and hopefully have two good ones when I am done.
One with the LSD, one with a stock open diff.

Well here is the offfending diff. One damn tooth broke off and caused that hole.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff92/stealthee3k/diff1.jpg
And here is the gearset
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff92/stealthee3k/gearset.jpg
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff92/stealthee3k/gearset2.jpg
Anyone who can help I want to make sure I do this right.
I know the larger shaft (to the left in the first pic) spins the diff and thats free standing.
From there I want to make sure I remove the other parts to the gearset properly to place them in the good bellhousing.
Does the selector shaft get unbolted and slid out?
Do the two bolts you can see in the second pic by the reverse idler have to come out?
Last question has to do with the races in the casing. A few fell out when I seperated the case. Whats the best way to press them back in?
I really dont want to fuck this up and I appreciate any help I can get. If there are any guides online you know of I would appreciate that as well.

Well I got one trans reassmelbed. Waiting on the excess RTV to dry so I can peel it off and I am going to paint the trans case.
Going to go ahead and pull the clutch and flywheel so I can do the rear main seal while its out.
Need to clean up the pressure plate too since its covered in oil.
Also going to put my 3sx pulley on and my stainless clutch line.
Might finally get to my big tyla ground wires too. ;)

Yeah, I bought a bunch of things over the winter and never made time to install them.
Its a good thing I decided to install my pulley.
I started loosening the tensioner and it felt weird. Didn't notice anything until I pulled the belt off and watched my altenator fall backward.
On the SOHC's the alt and PS run on the same belt. The alt is in the back. It has one long bolt that rund thru the "pivot" on the alt and a piece that sticks out on the oil pump. The top bolts solid to a small braket. Well the pivot bolt was in place but the small one was not. The belt was the only thing holding my alt in place.
I had wondered why my voltage didnt seem to be as good as it usually is. Niow I know.

I've got a horrible feeling.
I think the trans has to come back out.
I had a dream last night and it made me sick to my stomach but it was that when I assembled the trans I didnt verify there was a race and shim in the bell housing.
Well after the quick test ride I dont think there is.
I have all my gears and it shifts flawlessly. But there is this God awful racket. I think its the sound of the bearing on the diff riding the inside of the case.
I honestly feel like I am going to break down any minute now.

Its all back out and the trans is disassembled.
I was wrong about the race, its in its place. I have been fighting trying to track down what the noise is though.
I think I found it.
Vid is kinda crappy. I only have two hands or I would have gotten it better.
Basically at the top of the screen is the reverse idler gear. It shouldnt be moving as I am in 2nd gear.
As you can hear it is not onyl moving but making a horrible clacking noise.
When I put it in nuetral, or it knocks me out of 2nd which it was doing on the floor here, the idler gear is staying in the same spot and sometimes it continues to do what it is doing in 2nd.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff92/stealthee3k/th_S3010006.jpg (http://s239.photobucket.com/albums/ff92/stealthee3k/?action=view¤t=S3010006.flv)
I've got one theory on how to fix it. I dunno if its correct or not though.
Basically the shaft that moves the reverse idler has a piece that sticks into it and its what raises or lowers the reverse idler. I'm thinking maybe theres only one way its supposed to go back on, and I got it upside down causing it to make the idler sit in a wierd spot.
I dunno, its a thought

Yeah, now just imagine how it sounded going down the road.
I tried moving the piece that grabs the shaft, no go.
I tried putting another idler selector arm on, no go.
Next step is trying another idler shaft.
If that doesn't work I give up.

Victory is mine.
So after this post I put the transback together and reinstalled.
Guess what. I had to tear it all back out AGAIN.
It turns out there was a nasty chip in the intermediate shafts gear. There was minor damage to the bearing as well.
After I swapped that out and put it all back together the car is damn near perfect. I have all gears even reverse. :)
I do have some slight gear whine. I can live with that.
