Hey once again its me, my starter crapped out on me :(. that damn well sucks. good thing is i work at a place i can get under a car, so i would like to know how to change my starter myself. If anyone is up to the response it would be greatly appreciated. (damn Autozone took our cars out of the component location tab :banghead:. it was so useful!!!!!! write them and tell them to get it back, i did!

More than likely I'll also need to know this but mine is a 91 3.1 but I think they are in the same location.

I did my starter (with help) this spring. its a /94 3.4l v6.

we got the front of the car up on ramps (u know the kind from CanTire).

Next the A/C pipes/hose had to come out/off. there was so little room in there.

In our case, the AC hadn't worked for 5 years, so it was empty. Just one bolt on the AC unit, and two pipe fittings on the other end (driver side front).

What comes out is some tubing and hose, looking like part of a fridge.

With that out of the way, you can see what you're doing much better (but a worklight is real useful.

I think there were one or two wires on the starter itself, which we removed first. Maybe a small ratchet or maybe some wrenchs, can't remember.

Then I think 2 or 3 mounting bolts had to come off, and the starter just drops down. Almost everything was done from below.

We took the old one back for a discount on a rebuilt starter, and to make sure it was the same one (same mounting holes etc.).

This starter is easy to get, cause this motor was used for a few years in both Luminas and Monte Carlos etc.

We got the new one in and wired it up, and got the motor started after some reving and jumps.

The rebuilt motor cost us $180 Can.

The total job was about $300 because we bought a fanbelt too and $100 worth of tools (was my first serious mechanical job on our own, and we bought rachet sets and extra wrenches).

We put the A/C hoses back in at that time, but later we removed them, cut off the ends and used them for 'covers' on the piping sticking out on drivers side (to protect those parts from dust in case someone wanted to put the AC back in later). We took the AC compressor right off, and replaced it with a dummy pulley wheel to keep the fanbelt operating (this dummy pulley cost $50 on Ebay).

Tools used:

Ratchet set, wrenches, pliers, wire brush, rags, ramp stands, some cardboard to lie down on, and hand cleaner. Maybe some big flathead screwdrivers and probably a Philips too, but I can't remember all the details.

The wire connections should be washed/dipped scrubbed in baking soda solution to clean off any corrosion, and carefully dried. AFTER reconnecting, you can put some vaseline on the connectors to prevent exposure to dust and salt/water from the road.

Working on your back looking up with dirt and shit falling in your eyes, I STrongly recommend some safety glasses/goggles, no matter how inconvenient they seem.
