1994 3.1 GT A/C Issues

I have a 94GT w/ 3.1L.

When I turn on the AC is just blows ambient temp air - nothing even remotely cold. I checked the refridgerant level using my recharge kit and it came up a little low. I decided to add a can of R-134 (what it takes) to "freshen up" the system, thinking that would do the trick.

Well, it didn't. The car up on ramps, R-134 can connected to low side port, car idling w/ AC on MAX, it won't take any refridgerant. My kit is a gun type hose (it lets me use only what I need).

I did notice a kind of hollow tapping sound from the compressor (kind of like what you would expect to hear when a car starts to get low on oil, just much softer). I'm wondering if the compressor is shot and needing replaced or if there is something else I should check.

The clutch is engaging on the compressor, so its trying to run. MY thoughts are this: Guage says level ok, clutch engaging, not really cold air, it must need a charge...

Any advice as to a check I can perform WITHOUT taking the car to a shop (don't really have the $$ to do that right now).

Also, if the compressor is shot, would I be able to trust one from a boneyard? I have one near me with a couple low mileage GAs sitting. (Low mileage - most are low compared to the 260K I have on mine)

Thanks in advance for any help / advice.

I would have it checked with a more accurate tool then what comes with the recharge kits.

Plus the system could be full, and still not have enough refridg. to keep cold.

And if you replaced it with a new or used compressor , you'll still need a garage to pull a vacum on the system or it wont take any refridg and oil into the system.

Many things in this system that could be affecting its performance. :2cents:
