Hi i just had a question about the carb on a 72 or 73 vw super beetle. A friend has had carb problems and he ask me to help. Now the problem that he is having is that the car will run down the road fine but then when he stops at a stop light it wants to stall. he said it will not idle. Now i think his biggest problem is that he let someone else mess with it and now its all outta wack:nono:

If it stalls at idle it's most likely the idle shut-off solenoid valve. That's the little cylinder sticking out of the left side of the carb. It is designed to shut off when the key is turned off, preventing gas from getting into the cylinders.

Remove the wire (with the key on, engine off) and touch it to the terminal a few times. You should be able to hear and feel it "click". If it doesn't, make sure it is connected to the proper terminal on the ignition coil. If it still doesn't click you'll need to replace it.

You might also make sure the automatic choke is properly adjusted.

Thank you for your reply. I will have him try that with the idle shut off solenoid and if it turns out to be in working condition then he may have to do a little more adjusting on it.

Here's a link for full tune-up procedures, including the carb. Good source of info.
