Why do you need it for inspection?
Your inspection station should know where to look for it if they need it.

I live in Finland and just imported the car from Sweden and on the first inspection they need the number so I can register it here and get my licence plates. The inspection guy couldn't find the number and told me to find it and show it after paying the import-tax(long story) when I pick up the plates.
Guess I got about a week to find it, dunno what happens if i dont.
Maybe I'll take some letter stamps and punch in a new number but the cops wont like that

You might try GM.
In the USA the state police have the vin no locations.
And inspect them for salvage rebuildertitles and stolen cars.
But Most are very tight lipped about where they are.
Some larger body shops or salvage yards may have info on them.
Good Luck

You are welcome.
Sorry I could not be of more help.
It is a bummer when you have to do the inspection's stations work for them.
Do you have a choice of another inspection station?
Also you might call your insurance agent or insurance adjuster for help on it.
Good luck
